Anything Is Possible In Retirement

I fully believe that retirement is the best time of your life.  You’ve spent a lifetime working for other people and being told what to do.  Now, your time is completely your own.  Anything is possible in retirement and there are no limits on what you can do.  People even start second careers after retiring from their first.  The doctor who operated on my back when I had herniated a disc in my thirties, was actually a retired Air Force pilot who had a fascination with medicine.  He didn’t just go back to school to become a doctor, he became a neurosurgeon who would fly his helicopter from hospital to hospital.  I developed a great admiration for the man not only because he did a great job in relieving my pain, but because he was a great example of what you can accomplish if you really want to do something in life.  Retirement is everyone’s second chance in life.  All the dreams you had in your youth can be brought back to life.  All the things you put on hold while you were working to support a family can become a reality.  There are really no limits to what you can do in retirement if you’re willing to make some modifications.

The only limitations are the ones that you create because anything is possible in retirement.

Almost every kid dreams of being a sports hero at some point in their childhood.  Whether it’s winning the World Series with a walk-off home run or throwing four touchdown passes in the Super Bowl, the fantasies we create when we are young can stay with us for longer than we think.  While the chances of a sixty-year-old playing a major sport is quite small, there are ways to scale those dreams back just a bit but still get quite a thrill during your retirement years.  There are many senior leagues where the dreams of your youth can be kept alive and, if golf is your game, you can play as much as you want and sharpen your skills to a point where your score is better than ever.  Anything is possible in retirement if you’re willing to explore the possibilities.

For those who like music, there are many paths that you can take.  A friend of ours started his own business as a DJ for senior dances and other events.  He combined his love for music and his desire to be on stage and now has a very enjoyable and lucrative hobby that he absolutely loves.  He is constantly building his collection of music and loves to throw in a little bit of history for each song.  His audience loves it.  The idea for this little venture occurred to him at a wedding that he attended.  He looked at the person providing the entertainment that evening and decided he could do the same thing but only a little bit more personalized to suit the occasion.  He bought some used equipment and took the plunge and now has to turn some dates down because he is so busy.  He found out that anything is possible in retirement and is very happy he took that first courageous step.

Golf Can Be Your Job

That really is the biggest battle in trying something new: having the courage to get started.  Believe it or not, even though achieving success is great, making the effort and starting the journey can be more satisfying than you ever thought possible.  We know two people who have their artwork on the walls of their home and a couple of the paintings are quite beautiful.  You can see their talent evolve with each picture and they both can’t wait to get into their studios each day.  I feel very sorry for people who have their existence dictated by what’s on television that day.  Retirement was meant to be exciting and fulfilling and, when you can add a little creativity to a hobby, suddenly, you find your days going by at a pace that is truly amazing.  Anything is possible in retirement and the opportunities are endless.

The Cruise Experience Can Be Life Changing

We have found travel to be our shared passion.  My wife has a busy social calendar with her garden club, book club and card dates, but we both look forward to a little excursion here and there.  Although we have been fortunate to see an incredible amount of this world, we enjoy a small day trip to a historic site or museum.  My wife appreciates history (as long as there is no test), but her favorite part of these little trips is the dining experience that has been researched in connection with what we’ve just seen.  Ever since our first date, food and the enjoyment of different cuisines have been a shared passion that we have.  Retirement has given us the time to plan meals and try different recipes, and we have a group of friends that we share those experiences with.  If you had told me back when I was in college that I would enjoy this type of lifestyle, I would have thought you were crazy, but anything is possible in retirement.

This can be the most enjoyable time of your life if you let your imagination take control. It’s time to relive your fantasies.  Take an art class or write a book.  Take a cooking class or start a restaurant blog.  Start a travel journal or take up pickleball.  Anything is possible in retirement.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
