Become a Writer in Retirement

One of the things that really annoy me and one of the reasons I started this website is when I meet someone who says that they’re bored in retirement.  They ask, “how much golf can you play?”  To be honest, I have no patience for that.  There are so many interesting things in this world you have to make an absolute effort to not find something interesting to do.  It’s like going to a top restaurant that has a ten-page menu and saying that they don’t have anything that you like.  There is no shortage of things to do in this world or places to go or books to read or skills to learn.  My advice is always to go back into your memory bank of childhood dreams and think about how exciting the world looked when you thought that anything was possible.  The truth is that anything is actually possible as long as it’s within reason. No, you won’t be chosen for the next flight to the moon but that doesn’t mean you can’t nourish your dreams of exploration.  The need to make a living got in the way for many of us in fulfilling our biggest dreams but retirement opens up new possibilities.  I really never knew what I wanted to be but being a writer was probably near the top of the list.  My submissions to magazines produced very little income so I looked for a steadier income from Corporate America.  I knew that I needed to support a family and save for retirement and, when I could finally escape from the rat race, I could revive my dream and become a writer in retirement.  I know a few people who have followed similar paths, and they have gotten more satisfaction from writing than they ever thought possible.  In fact, it’s now a suggestion whenever I meet someone who has a passion for a hobby or interest.  Why not become a writer in retirement?

Journal

The first thing you should do is to keep an open mind about the term “writer” because it doesn’t have to mean that you’re going to author a book, although many retirees have.  It doesn’t even mean you have to let anyone see your writing. Diaries are a very healthy outlet for many people.  Writing things down helps you to organize your thoughts and gets you to consider alternative viewpoints.  Writing can also sharpen your mind and satisfy your curiosity about a particular subject. If you have an area of expertise, I can guarantee that someone is making money writing about it.  There is a world of opportunities in the writing world that can lead to a very steady income and a lifestyle that puts you in control in a way that you might not have thought possible.  That’s why so many retirees have decided to become a writer in retirement.  It’s not a bad life.

Become a writer in retirement and you might be surprised at the opportunities that open up.

From business to business writing to creating content for the internet, many retirees are spending a few hours a day and creating a steady income with just three or four regular customers.  The extra money is nice but even better is the fact that you get to set your own hours and you can do everything from home.  Unless, of course, your writing involves traveling and reporting on the trendiest places in the world to go.  We’ve all read those travel articles or reviews about cruises or restaurants, haven’t we?  Someone is writing them and getting paid for it.  Why couldn’t that be you?  Become a writer in retirement and your whole life can change.

And for those who feel like they have the next great American novel in them, that’s okay too.  I have written two novels (that were never intended to be published) and I can honestly say that the process was challenging, exciting and something I might re-visit.  The amazing thing is that you know when you are doing something that is feeding an inner part of you.  There’s a need to keep doing it as often as you can and to keep getting better at it.  If you’ve ever thought about writing, why not give it a try.  It might take you a while to find your comfort zone but, trust me, you will.  I started this website after our first winter escape in retirement where we started in Key West and worked our way around the Gulf Coast.  We visited Hemingway’s house and, while I gazed at his portrait, I knew that I would become a writer in retirement.  Starting this website has been extremely enjoyable and it allows me to write about anything that I want.  There are no rejections from an editor, and I can take a day off whenever I want.  Surprisingly, editors and media outlets have contacted me to see if I would consider doing a few articles and, on occasion, I have done so.  But I enjoy the freedom of this business too much to make it into a job.  Why not give it a try.  Create a website or start a novel.  Become a writer in retirement because it’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
