Why Not Become
An Author In Retirement?

Seriously, why not become an author in retirement?  You have more experiences and knowledge than you give yourself credit for and there will be people who would love to read your life story.  Don’t believe me?  Just think if you came across the life story of one of your parents or even a novel that they had written.  Wouldn’t you be curious to read it?  Even if it’s just a diary of what they did and the dates they did it with some notes that capture what was going on in their minds at the time.  How fascinating would that be?  Wouldn’t your children or grandchildren be interested in reading your life story?

To become an author in today’s world does not mean you have to submit your work to a publisher.  It doesn’t mean you have to be published at all.  You can make a very nice collection of memories and put it into a nice booklet with pictures that will become a family treasure.  You’ll also be surprised at how fulfilling it can be to actually put your thoughts on paper.  There’s something amazing that happens in your brain when you recall old memories that triggers other thoughts and recollections that you thought were lost long ago.  You are unique and there’s never been another person like you.  You have a history that needs to be captured and you’re the only one who can do it.  It will be a true family gift and become your legacy.

Become An Author And Create A Family History

But don’t sell yourself short.  You can become an author and have a much broader audience than your family.  Do you have any idea how many novels are based on a family history or experience?  Make some name changes and perhaps set the story in a different time period and you’ll have an exciting tale that people will appreciate and wonder how you created it.  Become an author and find out what a great feeling comes over you as you create a picture with words, and no one has to see it but you.  It’s a great learning experience and there are resources that will help you learn the craft of writing well. It’s almost therapeutic as you put your feelings on paper and write about the things that gave you joy or brought you sadness.

Did you suffer the loss of a loved one?  Capturing those feelings can be very helpful and serve the needs of others who are going through a similar experience.  There are so many reasons to become an author and almost none of them have to do with money.  But, if you like to write, don’t discount that as a possibility whether it’s a work of fiction or a “how to” manual of some kind.  Are you a collector?  It’s amazing how much information is available on all kinds of things that people collect and writing about a specific topic can be extremely enjoyable.

Whenever I come across someone with that type of interest or passion in a specific area, I always suggest to them that they become an author and learn more about their hobby in the process.  There’s almost no better feeling than having your words in print and appreciated by a fellow traveler on this journey of life we are all on.  There's a retired New York City fireman who has written several books on the Alamo which is one of his passions.  He has gained such a reputation that he has appeared on a couple of documentaries and has been a speaker at a number of events.  Do you have an interest that has made you an expert?  I can almost guarantee that you learn even more when you do the research you need to do to write a book about whatever topic holds a special place in your heart.  Actually, it doesn't even have to a book.  You can start a website and still tap into that desire to write.  A website is more flexible than a book and gives you the chance to have a "real time" relationship with your audience.  After working on your website for a little while you'll probably have written the equivalent of a book anyway and you can turn that into a manuscript at any time.  Retirees are starting their own internet businesses in record numbers because technology has made it easy.  One company in particular has taken away many of the obstacles that kept people from starting a website.  You no longer have to be a technical professional to create a presence on the internet. If you can write an e-mail, there's an excellent chance that you will be able to create your own website and have a lot of fun doing it.  There are many cases you can read about to give you enough inspiration to take that first step which is the biggest struggle of all.

If you've ever had the desire to become an author, retirement is the perfect time to do it.  If you have an idea for a novel in your head, by all means get started writing today.  If you tend more to a factual biography, history or how-to book, there's a worldwide market for you to reach because, with the internet, you can target just about any audience you can think of.  Do you want to grow roses in the desert?  Chances are good that someone has put together some research on how to do that and published a book, started a website or created a YouTube channel on the best type of rose to start with.  Why not cultivate the writer in you?  You'll never know what can happen until you give it a try.  It's time to Enjoy Retired Life!
