Become An Expert In Retirement

Everyone should be an expert at something.  That’s my own personal opinion but I have learned that, if you try to become an expert in retirement, you realize that the more you learn, the more there is to find out.  If you take this project seriously, you become aware of the vast amount of knowledge that already exists on any subject you can name.  Throughout human history there have been people who devoted themselves to learning all they can about a certain subject and, even more impressive, there were people who would qualify as experts on a vast array of topics.  Those geniuses, however, would be the first to emphasize all the things they have yet to learn.  We can all name the big topics like astronomy, geology, biology and even history.  But I’m referring to subtopics or even micro topics like the respiratory system of the thylacine, otherwise known as the Tasmanian Tiger.  Yes, there are people who are experts in that field and while that might not be your first choice as a subject, I’m sure there’s something you’re interested in that others would consider a little obscure.  That’s called a passion and it’s waiting to be explored.

Try to become an expert in retirement and you start to learn about details you had never thought about before and you come to the conclusion that there is always more to learn.  Even the simplest topic has aspects you never thought of and you realize how people have become lost in topics that fascinate them for one reason or another.  If you choose any part of nature, you’re in for a lifetime of learning.  The wonders of the world we live in and the incredible systems of nature that exist have fascinated people for thousands of years. That aspect alone creates another perspective to explore, which is how our knowledge was gained over time through the theories that were created, sometimes incorrectly, and the great discoveries that were made.  We think we’re so intelligent in this day and age and in some ways we are but when we look into the past on any subject and trace the expansion of our knowledge within that area, you develop an appreciation for the generations that came before us.

I believe that retirement gives us the opportunity to truly appreciate the world we live in if we haven’t done so before.  Now I’m sure most people would say that they have an appreciation of nature and the beauty of the world we live in.  But do they?  Have you ever created something that you were really proud of but didn’t get the recognition you thought you deserved?  Perhaps it was a meal that you worked hours on that was gobbled up in minutes without a single word of praise.  Or a present that you bought for someone that you spent hours thinking and searched every store to find only to get a lukewarm “thanks” or even a complete rejection.  Sometimes I think half the population of the world sleepwalks past the wonders of nature and the world we live in, ignores the wisdom of past generations and has no desire to learn anything more than they already know because they think they’ve seen and know it all.  These are the people who are bored with life, and I hope I never become one of them.

Become an expert in retirement and you'll realize the amount of work involved in learning.

I have looked at retirement as a time in my life where I can undo any complacency I developed over the years.  Retirement is a time to slow down and savor the world around you and within you.  I think if people took the time, they would discover an inner curiosity about something in life.  They should become determined to become an expert in retirement on that subject.  It doesn’t matter what it is because it’s different for everyone and that’s the beauty of this exercise.  You start to realize that the more you learn about something that fascinates you, the more you realize how much more there is to learn.  It’s amazing to discover what the experts who preceded us discovered and how much they documented for future generations.  Even more profound is how much has been lost and is being rediscovered on a regular basis on just about any topic you can think of.  This is what happened to James Nestor who wrote “Breath” who wrote a bestseller on breathing.  Yes, breathing.  Your first reaction might be how can anyone write a book about something as simple as breathing?  And how could it ever become a bestseller?  Before Mr. Nestor became curious about the subject, that may have been his reaction as well.  But then he started to explore and that’s what his fascinating book is about.
