Retirement has been a dream come true for me. It has exceeded my expectations in just about every way and, other than getting older with all of the physical problems that come along with it, there is nothing that I don’t like about these past eight years. That, I’m happy to say that is true for most of our friends but there are a couple of people who have seen their incomes shrink because of rising prices and that has caused a bit of a problem for them. If you’re one of those who’ve struggled because of inflation, I’m happy to say that creating more income in retirement may be easier than you think and I don’t mean going out and getting a job. There’s nothing wrong with a job as long as it’s something you enjoy doing but if you’re looking to add to your income, there may be other ways to do that than becoming an hourly employee.

Many retirees have created little retirement businesses that have not only solved their money problems but also created a new interest and learning experience. One couple we know had a basement full of their parent’s “stuff” and finally went through it and found they were sitting on more money than they thought. Old jewelry that didn’t seem to be anything special turned out to be more valuable than they thought. It was fun to research and a very wise move not to take it to one of those places that will buy your silver and gold. They got a lot more money by creating their own store online and it was easier to do than they thought. While e-Bay is probably the biggest marketplace, there are other sites that might be more appropriate depending on what you have to sell. The thing to keep in mind is that there is probably a market for the things you have collected over your life and, when you find the right buyer, you can get far more than you would at a “garage sale” or “flea market”. Creating more income in retirement may be as easy as decluttering your house, garage and basement and you’ll be surprised at how much fun you can have when you do it. The internet has given you access to a worldwide marketplace and it’s amazing what people are selling. Don’t be surprised if you sell out of your collectibles quickly. My wife was very surprised at her venture into this previously unknown world. She had found old Christmas ornaments that she was going to donate to the local thrift store and was curious about what these things were worth. It didn’t take long for her to become an online merchant, and she thoroughly enjoyed the process. Of course, there are always those buyers who want the bargain of a lifetime, and they’ll offer you ten dollars for something you know is worth fifty. She learned to be patient and would not go down more than ten percent. She sold everything including a set of Norman Rockwell glasses that we had gotten as a fast-food promotion. There’s a buyer for just about anything.

But you don’t have to sell your valuables if you’re interested in creating more income in retirement. You can make money from your hobby or interest and there are retirees who are starting their own websites doing exactly that. I started this website because I enjoy writing and helping people make the most of their retirement and this business has been more enjoyable than I ever imagined. I think everyone should have their own website. It’s a way to keep up to date on technology and to give you something to fall back on if your primary source of income becomes compromised. I did very well during my working years, but I always felt like I had all of my eggs in one basket as the saying goes. The company I worked for was bought and sold a number of times and there were always layoffs or reassignments that came along with the process. I was fortunate never to be affected but I always thought it would be nice to have a little business to fall back on. If this kind of business existed thirty years ago, I probably would have done it. When websites started to become popular you needed a lot of technical skills to create one but that isn’t true anymore. There’s one company that will guide you step by step in the process to build a website that can actually generate an income. It’s attracting more retirees than ever. Creating more income in retirement is easier than you think.
If it sounds like too big of an undertaking, I do understand that, but you should at least consider it and investigate it because the results speak for themselves. A job is a more conservative approach and there are ways to make that as enjoyable as possible. You can also cut costs in retirement as a way to help make ends meet. I was determined to not make retirement a series of downsizing steps and a retreat from life in general. We have been very fortunate to have been able to travel and spend time with our family and to escape the cold each winter. Retirement is meant to be enjoyed and there are many ways to have fun, learn new things without breaking the bank. Don’t let a lack of money get in your way of anything you want to do. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
