Discover Fishing In Retirement

I have many hobbies and interests that I have pursued in retirement.  I have a great admiration for people who strive to improve a skill or try a new activity or doing something they always wondered about. Although my experience with fishing is limited to my childhood and one deep-sea fishing expedition that I was forced to go on during my time in Corporate America, I can safely say that you will probably never see me with a fishing pole in my hands during my retirement days.  Having said that, judging from the activities of many of our friends, you might want to discover fishing in retirement if you haven’t tried it already.  As enjoy my morning coffee I can almost always see somebody out on their boat trying to catch something.  It can be cold and drizzly or warm and foggy.  It doesn’t matter.  They’ll be out there as I sit on our deck and enjoy my coffee in a way that I never could during my working days.  One of the greatest pleasures of retirement is the lack of meetings and phone calls and the ability to catch up on the morning news at your own leisure.  Sometimes that morning news is rather troublesome, but no one forces me to read the details of what’s happening in the world.  Even better, I don’t have to prepare and give a presentation about it.  That may be what’s going on in the minds of those fishermen as well (although there are definitely some ladies out there too).

Fishing

Many seniors discover fishing in retirement, and they get lost for hours in sheer joy.

It does seem like they’re in their own world out there and they’re quite intent as they cast their line and slowly draw it back in.  They each have their own style, and some seem much more experienced than others. There are many paths to follow in the life of a fisherman.  No doubt some of them do all kinds of fishing and not just the carefree drifting on our lake.  Some have probably gone out on fishing expeditions or traveled great distances to fish in the rivers and streams that showcase salmon or trout.  Many have pursued this hobby from the time they were young but many probably waited to discover fishing in retirement.  There is something about this sport that keeps people absorbed for hours.  Whether its fly fishing in a stream or tackling sharks in the ocean, this activity has attracted all kinds of people and many of them will tell you that it’s their absolute favorite activity on earth.  Quite a few presidents enjoyed fishing in their spare time and Calvin Coolidge was photographed trout fishing in a suit and tie.  I confess to never having had a desire to take up this hobby.  My father took us fishing a few times at our request and there were some days that we caught dozens of blowfish in the Long Island Sound but it was never something that I truly looked forward to. But that’s the wonder of life, isn’t it.  Everyone is different and we all have unique interests that keep us occupied for hours. Many of my friends would rather have root canal than have to read some of the books that I read for pleasure.  For some reason they don’t consider a history of Supreme Court decisions to be much of a page turner.

I will probably never discover fishing in retirement but that doesn’t that you can’t.  If you’ve ever had the desire to give it a try, why not make that happen soon.  I will agree that freshly caught fish are rather good but that doesn’t mean I have to be the one to catch it.  Apparently, there’s always someone willing to do that judging from the number of people you see engaged in this activity.  One our winter journeys we cross over many bridges with people who have their fishing lines cast off the side with buckets ready to hold their catch.  Amazingly, our lake is a catch and release location so, no matter what you catch, you are supposed to throw it back.  They stock the lake every year and it has gained a reputation of being one of the best lakes to fish in all of New York State.  It must be good because there are certainly enough people doing their best to land their catch of the day.  Our little boat has a depth finder which also shows where the fish are so it’s pretty interesting to venture into one of the coves and see the fish pop up on the screen.  They seem to know that I pose no threat to their safety.

Retirement is a time to try new things so, in addition to golf and pickleball and mountain climbing, you might want to discover fishing in retirement.  Who knows, you may end up with a new hobby and write a book about your adventures.  That’s what this time in your life should be about.  Go out and see the world and try new things.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
