Discover The World Of Books

One of my favorite things to do is read.  Once you discover the world of books, you become a different person.  Whether you read a book the old-fashioned way or have books downloaded to a computer device, you enter into a world of your own when you have a good book in your hands.  This can be true with audio books as well because when you’re hanging on every word carefully annunciated by a gifted reader, you become immersed in the story or subject matter no matter what else is happening around you.

Books are amazing.  “I cannot live without books” were the words spoken by Thomas Jefferson and I could not agree with him more.  Once you have a good book in your hands you want to enjoy it thoroughly and there’s a deep sense of loss when there are no more pages in the carefully crafted manuscript to enjoy.  Discover the world of books and you can travel the world without leaving your home or become an expert in a topic without ever sitting in a classroom.  You can learn from the great philosophers of life or read the classic tales that are sprinkled with the most unforgettable characters of all time.  A good book makes you appreciate good writing and when you’re being guided by someone who has mastered the written word, you are in the hands of someone who will lead you on a journey that you will not want to end.

Discover the world of books and you might get lost forever.

Discover books in retirement and you never have to be alone.  A favorite author has a way of speaking to you like a long-lost friend and fellow traveler on this road through life that we are all on.  Sometimes you feel like you know them as any Jane Austen follower will attest to.  Sometimes you admire them from a distance because writers like Hemingway and Faulkner prefer it that way.  And sometimes they can become part of a celebration like the characters of Charles Dickens.  Gifted writers create their own world and invite you to live in it.

Good biographers do the same thing.  I spent three wonderful days getting to know John Adams personally through the genius of David McCullough.  And Ron Chernow did such a masterful job of giving Alexander Hamilton life that Lin-Manuel Miranda felt compelled to write a musical about him.  The extraordinary collection of statesmen who were chosen by Abraham Lincoln for his cabinet were as real as your next-door neighbors as you read the pages of Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin.  These extraordinary writers retold our nation’s history in a way that captivated millions of people and each of these stories was transformed into a real-life production.  I wish this would happen more often with our history because it’s as good a story as you will find in any soap opera.  The HBO series on John Adams was magnificent and so was Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln movie.  My wife will play the soundtrack from Hamilton quite often and doesn’t quite believe me when I tell her that the book was better.

Discover the world of books and you might discover the world of writing as well.  It is inspiring to read a well written book regardless of whether it’s fiction or fact.  I admire the word choices and the careful phrasing a good author uses and wish that I could come close to that in my own creations.  I actually got inspired to write two novels and a book although I doubt that I will ever publish them.  It was the feeling that I got when I sat down to write and the sense of accomplishment that I got as I moved through the process.  You are creating your own world, and it is unbelievably satisfying.  There is magic and power in the written word and the creation of a story is an art.  Stories can impact people in a way that is almost beyond belief.  It is why every child loves a bedtime story, and, in the end, we are all still children.  When you get to this stage in life, you realize that more and more.  The meaning of life has baffled people for thousands of years.  You come to realize that no matter how much you know, there is still so much more that you don’t.

Discover the world of books and explore the universe in a way that you can’t imagine.  Any topic you can think of has been written about anything you ever thought of learning has a textbook to help you gain the knowledge that you need to become an expert.  You should never be bored in retirement.  There are too many books to read and too many things to learn.  Go and get busy.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
