Embrace Lifelong Learning in Retirement

Although retirement might mean the end of your working career, it can be the beginning of a whole new lifestyle.  We live in an amazing world and, if you embrace lifelong learning in retirement, you’ll quickly find out that many of the things you have taken for granted become absolutely fascinating if you take the time to learn about them and focus on their wonder and complexity.  New questions will come to your mind the more you delve into some of the mysteries of our planet.  You might find yourself acting like the two-year-old who constantly asks questions.  When you open your eyes to the world around you, the number of things you don’t know becomes readily apparent.  The number of places you haven’t been to offers a challenge to explore the world and the details of our own history and ancient civilizations are waiting to be discovered by you.

Galaxy

One look through a telescope or a visit to a planetarium can start you on a journey through space and might even make you consider astronomy as a hobby.  The pictures sent back by the Hubbel Telescope are absolutely amazing and if you aren’t fascinated by the size of our universe and the ways we are still learning about it, I question whether there’s anything in the world that will really impress you.  Embrace lifelong learning in retirement and you’ll see new things every day that are waiting to be explored by you

Pyramids

The wonders of the universe captured the imaginations of ancient civilizations and it’s amazing how much knowledge they had.  They built holy places based on the movement of the sun and tracked the planets as they moved across the sky.  Ancient civilizations were just as intelligent as us and we could not be where we are today without their knowledge that provided a foundation for future generations.  Travel to deserts of the southwest or to the Pyramids of Egypt and discover how smart these people were.  Make sure you get a competent guide who will set the stage for you as you learn how these people who lived thousands of years ago created structures that would be a challenge to build even today.  Embrace lifelong learning in retirement and you’ll discover how the way we live today is based so much on what our ancestors did hundreds and even thousands of years ago.  I always had a love of history and I am convinced, if it’s presented in the right way, almost everyone would make it a point to learn more about our past.  Events of the past have shaped our present-day life and studying history is our best chance to avoid the same mistakes our ancestors made.  None of us doubt that we learn from our mistakes as individuals (or at least we should), why do we doubt the wisdom of learning from our history? Why is war always such a quick response when we know how much destruction, waste and sorrow is left behind.  I happen to believe that if more people studied history, there might be less war and more cooperation as we discuss our problems rather than fighting over them.

Embrace lifelong learning in retirement and you might find yourself pursuing a new interest or hobby.

It's amazing what can happen to us when we expose ourselves to new ideas and cultures.  Embrace lifelong learning in retirement and you might discover a new hobby or interest and that can make all the difference in the world as you look for ways to keep your mind engaged.  Reading has been one of my favorite hobbies all of my life and books can open up new worlds and endless pursuits in gaining new knowledge. Many retirees join a book club to not only broaden their horizons but also to maintain social contacts which are very important as we age.  Although most clubs are focused on novels, you can find clubs that focus on just about anything including almost any period of history that you can name.  For those who struggle with the written word, there are audio versions of just about any book that’s in print.  There are also online documentaries and courses that are taught on a broad range of subjects.  I have taken quite a few courses online and the best part about them is that there are no grades!  As my wife always says: “I’ll go to any historic site you want as long as there’s no test.”  I agree with her on that.  Learning becomes much more enjoyable when you don’t have a paper to write or a test to take.

Visiting the Alamo will make Davy Crockett come alive.

The amazing thing about embarking on a path to increase your knowledge about almost any subject you can think of is the number of people who have blazed the path before you.  You might think you’re the only on interested in a subject but, when you start to do some research, you’ll find that there have been many others who were there first.  The great thing is that you can build on their knowledge as long as you verify it first.  Never assume that something written is a history book is true without verifying their sources.  One of my favorite subjects is the Alamo and that history has been revised so often there are books written about which books can be trusted and which ones cannot.  We are learning new things about events that occurred fifty, a hundred or even thousands of years ago and it’s one of the reasons I find history so fascinating.  It’s better than any soap opera that’s ever been written and, if you embrace lifelong learning in retirement, you will find endless enjoyment and open up a whole new world.  And it doesn’t have to be about history.  Learn how to cook like a master chef or how to build a table from scratch and you’ll develop an appreciation for what it takes to be an accomplished artisan.  Learn another language and test your skills in conversation with a native.  Learn to play an instrument well enough to perform in front of an audience.  Accomplishing any one of these tasks can bring more joy into your life than you ever thought possible.  Embrace lifelong learning in retirement and watch how the world changes for the better right in front of you.  Life is exciting when you discover the wonders of the world we live in.  Go on and take that first step.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
