I spent four decades working my way through Corporate America. I really couldn’t stand it. I viewed it as a means to an end and that end was retirement. When I finally escaped the working world, I felt like I was a prisoner who had been set free. I was determined to enjoy retired life every day. It is the happiest time of my life and for people who are struggling to fill their days and fight off boredom, I have developed a four-step program to maintain a happy and healthy outlook on life and a way to look forward to every single day.
The first thing you can do to turn your world around is to change your mind around. The world exists in your thoughts, and you see evidence of that every day. Look at a work of art and get some opinions about it and you’ll realize that the world and your reaction to it exists in your mind. You can enjoy retired life every day by conditioning your mind to be grateful for everything that you have. When you sit down and look at this universe that we are all a part of, that’s a pretty easy thing to do. How did you even get here? Who made this marvelous world that we’re a part of? If you got an anonymous invitation to go to a house at a certain time, what would you do? What if you decided to go to the address on the invitation and found out it was a spectacular mansion, and you were shown the front door and realized you were walking into a gigantic banquet. There was every kind of food you could imagine and anything you wanted to drink was right there. The people were very nice, and you felt completely welcome. At the end of the night, as people were starting to leave, do you think you might make an effort to find out who to thank for this wonderful evening? The fact is that we’ve each been born into a magnificent world waiting for us to explore and many people don’t appreciate it as much as they should. When we learn to be grateful for the life that we have, we take a huge first step to inner happiness. When we learn to appreciate and enjoy everything we have, we begin to enjoy retired life every day.
The world is quite amazing and there are literally endless opportunities for how to spend your time and that brings us to the second step in bringing happiness into our life. What is it that you want to do. What is your purpose in life and are you doing it? I believe everyone has an inner self that needs to be satisfied but too many people don’t nurture that inner being. There is creativity and genius in everyone if they have the nerve and take the steps to let it come out. Do you have a love for music, writing or painting? Do you want to travel and see the world or go to a place of solitude and explore the inner workings and power of your mind? I think there is an inner desire that is waiting to be fulfilled, and the next step is to identify it and prioritize it in your life. Don’t put it off any longer. Learn to play an instrument, deep sea dive, write a novel or even learn to fly. There is nothing to stop you but your inner fear. You are capable of far more than you know and a great philosopher once observed that too many people go to their grave with their music still inside. Don’t let that happen to you. Become the person you always wanted to be and enjoy retired life every day.
The third step you can take builds on the first two and that is to keep improving and never give up. There’s always something new to learn and new places to go. Make it a point to add something new to every day and let your curiosity take hold of you. When you find something you want to learn about or do, stay with it until that urge is satisfied. There is so much to learn about and the resources at your disposal through technology have never been better. Life is like that mansion in the story; it’s an endless buffet of just about anything there is. It is all there waiting for you to take action and start to enjoy retired life every day.
The final step on your road to more enjoyment and fulfillment out of life is to give back some of what you’ve been given. When you learn to be of service to others something wonderful happens to you. Speak to anyone who volunteers at a hospital or food kitchen, and you’ll hear stories that will show you how much kindness and goodness exists in this world of ours. You may not see it on the news, but you’ll see it for yourself when you start to give back to others. Retirement can be the most wonderful time of your life. Get out there and make it happen. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
