Explore America in Retirement

We have been fortunate to have been able to travel to many places around the world and we’ve never had a trip that we wouldn’t do again.  We live in a beautiful world.  But we should never forget what a wonderful country we have right here.  My parents always wanted to explore America in retirement but, for many reasons, they never were able to, and they finally lost their desire.  I hope that doesn’t happen to me.  I love to travel, and our country is big enough to keep anyone busy for a lifetime.  In some ways we are just like the explorers of long ago.  Every trip can be an adventure and to really explore anything, you need to experience all aspects of your destination.  We have not only made a list of destinations but we always try to visit the surrounding areas because that’s how you can learn about a new area and what’s going on in the places that you visit.  Dropping in at a local restaurant can give you knowledge and insights that you couldn’t get from any travel guide.  I think everyone should explore America in retirement.

Visiting the Alamo will make Davy Crockett come alive.

Part of what makes travel so interesting is to learn the history of an area.  Often, it will shape the future of a town and it’s interesting how the past and present blend together.  In San Antonio, for example, the Alamo and its history are a big part of what made this beautiful city such a tourist attraction.  It’s even more interesting to see what the city did with the River Walk, an incredible accomplishment that incorporates restaurants and shops along the San Antonio River.  The project broke ground in 1939 and is a testament to what can be done to embrace the old and the new and create a vision and an attraction that provides so much enjoyment for the locals and the thousands of visitors who come to this beautiful location.  Explore America in retirement and you’ll see many examples of how unique and diverse each little town across this country is.  Taste the local delicacies and you’ll be in for a real treat

One of Life's Great Rewards is to Explore America in Retirement

From Maine to California and Alaska to Hawaii, you can have a travel experience just by tasting the food and the local wines and beers.  There’s nothing better than seeing people enjoy life and embrace their culinary traditions and the place they call home.  Lobster in New England, Coney Island Hot Dogs, Philadelphia Cheese Steaks, Southern Barbecue, Cajun spices, Tex-Mex restaurants and Chicago Deep Dish Pizza don’t even scratch the surface of what this country has to offer.  The wine countries in California, Oregon and Washington and even Virginia and New York provide wonderful wines that continue to evolve and improve.  Distilleries are cropping up all over the country that complement the Kentucky Bourbons that gained worldwide fame.  Explore America in retirement and you’ll realize how lucky we are to live in this wonderful country.  Yes, we have problems but so does every country you visit.  The one thing we have learned from our travels is that people all over the world want the same things.  Safety and the ability to provide for their families is primary.  Good food and good drinks just add to the fun.

When you think about the natural wonders within our country, you can be overwhelmed.  There are so many of them you don’t know where to begin.  I know one couple who are halfway through their list of National Parks and can’t believe how many local gems there are.  When you count all the hiking trails, rivers, caverns and mountains to explore you realize that we have an abundance of travel destinations that provide a lifetime of travel.

From my own perspective, you can’t explore America in retirement without an appreciation of its history.  I’ve been to Washington, Philadelphia and Williamsburg many times and learn something new during every visit.  Seeing these places makes history come alive and it always brought a smile to my face when I heard our children reference something they saw on one of these visits.  Whether it was Judy Garland’s Ruby Slippers or the wonderful Strawberry Soup at Gadsby’s Tavern in Alexandria, our children appreciated these expressions more than they realize.  The fact is that I do as well.  Seeing different parts of our country (and the world for that matter), makes the news of the day much more impactful.  We saw the devastation of the California fires and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.  It brings home the fact that our lives are fragile and can turn around in an instant.  It makes you appreciate every day as a gift.

Explore America in retirement and you develop an appreciation for all the projects that are taking place to build our future but still embrace our past.  When you see old brick factories turned into little shopping malls you have a respect for all the effort it took to re-purpose a building and keep its personality instead of just tearing it down.  Traveling provides an endless learning experience, and our own country is a great place to start.  It is amazing to experience all the diversity that exists within our country from expansive beaches to vast deserts, breathtaking mountains and beautiful valleys that dot the landscape from one coast to another.  When you add Alaska and Hawaii, you realize that you have glimpses of nature that are as beautiful as anything you’ll see anywhere.  We have such a beautiful country that I felt the need to write about it.  People need to hear how wonderful retirement travel can be.  Explore America in retirement and you might feel the same way.  Who knows, you may start your own website in retirement that focuses on something that interests you.  Where can you find the best hot dog, pizza, hamburgers or barbecue?  Whatever your interest is, you’ll be amazed at what a following you can create.  It’s time to get busy and explore America in retirement.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
