Explore the World in Retirement

We are determined to explore the world in retirement.  That doesn't just mean traveling but, rather, broadening our horizons in all parts of our lives.  Education keeps you young and keeps you motivated and that education can come in any number of ways.  You can gain knowledge through books and lectures, and you can become a true world explorer even if you don’t leave your home.  One of the benefits of living to a retirement age is the time that you are given to explore all the topics and questions that you didn’t have time for during your working career.  I did not appreciate my time in school.  I was a good student but there wasn’t a single day where I looked forward to going to school.  I take full responsibility for that.  My teachers were great, for the most part, but I was one of those kids who would rather just explore things on his own with occasional guidance from a teacher.  I grew up to be an adult with that same outlook and now, a person who uses his free time to explore all the things that attracted my interest through the years.

When I could finally escape the working world, I became determined to explore the world in retirement and that included many places to travel to and many subjects to learn about.  Life is always about learning.  Whether it’s a new subject or language, a new culture or an ancient history, there are so many things that we don’t know and can benefit from.  If you’ve explored this website at all, you know I love to study history.  There are so many lessons to learn about in the past that you sometimes give up and don’t make an attempt to expand your knowledge.  We have found traveling is a way to learn in an exciting fashion.  No boring lectures, tests or term papers.  Put yourself in the hands of a competent guide who knows the history and culture of the area and you will gain a knowledge that can’t be found in books because actually seeing a building or a town brings everything alive.  We have been extremely fortunate to travel many places and our most recent journey to southern France and up the Rhine River brought home the fact that we must appreciate our history (no matter how dark) and learn from it.  In Germany, the scene of one of the most tragic events in the history of the world, they have become determined to learn from the Holocaust and are working to acknowledge that dark time.  They place little plaques in the street called Stumble Stones which capture the names of people who were killed.  More than ten thousand stones have been put in place and they are maintained by the high school students as a way to teach them their history.

We can always learn from our history.  We tend to think we are masters of our own world but, with a little study about past civilizations like the Roman Empire, you realize we’re only experiencing this level of prosperity because of the people who preceded us.  Seeing Roman roads, aqueducts and coliseums still in use makes you appreciate the wonderful accomplishments of that civilization.  You need to explore the world in retirement.  Travel is the best education you can get and using a competent guide can make all the difference in how efficiently you use your time.

But you can do the same thing if you never leave your home.  The internet is full of resources that will help you explore the world in retirement. A good documentary on the ancient worlds of Greece, Rome or the Incas will lead you into endless research that has a surprise at almost every turn.  I’m saddened by how many people become addicted to a story and binge watch an almost endless list of episodes about something that came out an author’s imagination when the actual history itself is even more unbelievable.  When you read the details about Nero and Caligula you almost doubt whether these things are true, but they are!  History is the ultimate soap opera and reading about or traveling to the actual locations where these things happened is the best form of education you can get.

Explore the world in Retirement and
you'll be amazed at what you learn.

We live in an absolutely wonderful country and, sometimes, the best reminder of that is to see someplace new.  You realize there are people who want the same things out of life that we do and are battling the same problems that we have.  We can sometimes become insulated because of how well off we are but seeing the owners and workers of the European vineyards battle the effects of climate change and global warming reminds us that we are all in this together.  You come away with an appreciation of other areas of the globe and the realization that almost all people want the same thing.  They want to be safe and have the ability to provide for their family.  Explore the world in retirement and you’ll realize how lucky we are to be alive and enjoy the wonders of our planet. Explore the world as it is now and start to unlock the secrets of the past. It’s time to see the world.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
