I like to think that this website is a dose of positive thinking for people who visit it, but I also realize that there are days when the clouds seem to gather. Facing problems in retirement is not always easy. As we age, our resources and our time become a little more constrained. Taking care of the simple things around the house may become too much to handle and everyone comes to a point in their life when they need just a little more assistance than they did before. I always fall back on a four-step process that helps me adjust to whatever life brings.
The first step is my foundation even when there are no problems on the horizon. Learn to be grateful for what you have. It isn’t always easy but, if you make a sincere effort to take that step, you’re on the journey to overcoming your difficulties. Facing problems in retirement like the loss of a spouse, child, sibling or even close friend is never easy. Appreciating the time that you had with that person is one way to get you through the grieving process. We don’t always understand why things happen. One of the things we can do is to contemplate what the great thinkers who have gone before us have said and follow their wisdom. For may people, believing in God and making faith a bigger part of your life is more than enough to get them through whatever life throws at them.
Some people say they have no faith at all. When you sit down and look at all the wonders of our vast universe, I find it impossible to believe that there isn’t a universal force that has created everything we see and all the things we don’t see. If that was the conclusion of Albert Einstein and many other great scientists, I have no problem putting my faith in a higher intelligence and going back to the foundation of my life which is gratitude for my existence. That is the second step in my process. It is to realize that there is a higher intelligence at work and to trust in it and learn as much as I can about it. The Bible is a great place to start and the words and works of Jesus are still at work in the world today. If you’re facing a crisis in your life, never be afraid to rely on a higher power than you. In fact, “be not afraid” is one of the most frequently mentioned sentiments in the New Testament.
The third step is to ask for help. This may even be the first step that you take. There is nothing wrong with looking for help to solve your problems. If your day-to-day existence has become problematic, there are organizations that will help you. Starting with your local senior citizen or your church is a good place to start. It’s not easy to ask for help but sometimes it’s the only way out. This can apply to physical, financial and emotional problems. The best part is that the people you find to help you will be very glad to do it. You’re not the only person facing problems in retirement and, no matter what those problems are, there is help available. We need to find the strength to ask.
The fourth step in this process is also one that you can do before you are facing problems in retirement and that is to give back to others. Always be grateful for what you have and always try to be of service to others. I’ve never met someone who practices those two virtues and isn’t happy. Some of the best grief counselors are those who have suffered a loss in their lives as well. You will be amazed at what happens when you talk about a problem and then help others to get through that same type of crisis. It is a way to make sense of your loss. You may never understand why something happened because it might not be for us to know in this lifetime. But you will be able to help yourself to get through a tragedy and then help others do the same. You see this all the time. Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the most successful organizations and the twelve-step program was created by someone who was living with the disease. The best grief and abuse counselors are often people who have shared this same kind of tragedy.
No one likes to talk about these subjects but, sometimes, life can get messy. One of the best things you can do is to prepare for the crisis before it happens. It’s like patching the roof before it rains or digging the well before you’re thirsty. Find someone who will bring peace and wisdom to your life. If organized religion is not something you don’t want to be a part of, authors like Wayne Dyer and Henry David Thoreau will help you gain a better understanding of life and the wonders of creation. Bad things happen once in a while but it’s important to remember that we live in a wonderful world and our creation and the life we were given is a miracle. Facing problems in retirement is never easy but it can make us stronger than ever and more determined to live our life to the fullest. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
