Finding Contentment in Retirement

Finding contentment in retirement should be everyone’s goal.  At this point in your life you should be able to go through most of your days pleased with your life and grateful for all that you have.  While this may sound obvious to some people, sadly, it’s unrealistic for others.  Even if the world around you seems to be caving in, there are things that you can do to bring happiness and contentment back into your life.  Even the hardest and saddest experiences such as losing a loved one can be faced and overcome.  It may not be easy, but it is possible.

The hardest part to accept is that what has happened in the past cannot be changed.  It’s over and there is nothing you can do to change what happened.  If made a mistake, there are things that can be done to rectify your actions.  It’s a good first step to acknowledge mistakes and apologize where it’s appropriate to do so.  From there you can make a commitment to change as a person and do your best to avoid that mistake in the future.  If your problems are serious, you may require counselling from a professional.  There are some authors who I have found to be extremely helpful in sorting out my life when things were not going as planned.  One writer, Dr. Wayne Dyer, was someone I followed for twenty years.  Although he died in 2015, I still find his books helpful, filled with very practical advice and his later writings became far more spiritual than his earlier works like Your Erroneous Zones.  Another writer is still with us and he seems to come up with an uplifting book every year.  Matthew Kelly wrote two books that I strongly recommend: The Rhythm of Life and Perfectly Yourself.  These two authors helped me make tremendous strides in my life because, left to my own devices, I can create a very dark world.  I’ve had no problem in finding contentment in retirement because most of the problems I had came from work.  Sad but true.  I have a wonderful family and am grateful for everything I have in life.  I am very aware that others don’t feel that way and struggle with different aspects of their lives.

Finding contentment in retirement is up to you.

The main thing to keep in mind is that you are the CEO of your life.  Don’t be afraid to reach out for help but, in the end, you’re the only one who can make changes in the direction your life is taking.  It seems that sometimes people avoid being accountable for their actions but a good first step is to realize that, quite often, the life we are experiencing today is the life that we created through some decision or action that we took.  Yes, bad things can happen that were no fault of our own, but it is still up to us to go forward in the best way that we can.  I realize these can sound like harsh words and this not the usual uplifting message I try to have throughout this website, but I believe people are masters of their own destiny and need to understand their actions today determine what they’ll be facing tomorrow.  Finding contentment in retirement is knowing your inner self and what makes you happy.  To reference the prayer that is part of Alcoholics Anonymous, we should ask for the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference.  Sometimes the best advice is the simplest.  Not the easiest, but the simplest.
