The typical retiree planned for many years to have enough of an income to support themselves during their golden years. Some of our friends struggle from time to time but most are enjoying a wonderful lifestyle with little splurges here and there. No matter what your situation though, finding extra money in retirement is always a good thing and the good news is that it’s easier than you think. This is especially true if you’re not in a rush.
Finding extra money in retirement can be as simple as a trip to the attic or basement. Let’s face it, almost all of us have accumulated a little “junk” over the years. The little odds and ends that we were sure would become a “collectible” are really pieces of worthless garbage to most people. But that’s where the fun begins because if you notice, I said “most people”. While it’s true that “most people” wouldn’t give you more than five dollars for an old Mickey Mouse watch, there are collectors who might give you a lot more than that if it’s in good condition. If it’s in the original box and never been worn, you might be very surprised at how much you can get. While you might not be able to turn your finances around with a single sale, you might be able to go out for a nice dinner. The amazing part is that you’ll make some collector very happy.
It’s worth a search on the internet to see what your “junk” might be worth. We know a couple who is still selling a relative’s collection of dinner and glass ware and they haven’t even started on the jewelry. While it’s tempting to take one cash offer for the contents of a house in an estate sale, you can turn it into a lucrative hobby or even steady income if you want or need the extra money. People get rid of the contents of a house all the time and one of the newer interests is to buy the contents of someone’s storage unit that has been abandoned. There is money in “junk” and all you need is the time to offer it for sale because the internet has become a global marketplace for anyone who wants to start a website on eBay or one of the other platforms that are becoming more and more popular. It can be very targeted at collectors and hobbyists, and the amazing thing is that it can be open 24 hours a day. It will always bring a smile to your face when you wake up and find you’ve made a sale. More retirees than ever are starting a website to generate extra income and it’s not just to sell their junk. Many have created a healthy business that has thousands of followers.
Why couldn’t that be you? Finding extra income in retirement can be easy as starting a new hobby that will not only generate income but provide hours of enjoyment. The days of garage sales and flea markets have been replaced by technology and the internet. Now, to be fair, there are still many people who attend flea markets or craft fairs and some of them make their own jewelry and supplement it with items that they buy or acquire from estate sales. They have very professional setups so it’s my guess that they’re doing pretty well financially. But, even more importantly, they’re having fun. There was a husband-and-wife team we saw in Florida who absolutely loved what they were doing. They were from Michigan and were in a summer tourist area and now supplement their income during their winter journey south. Although we have no intention of doing the same thing, we were very impressed with their creativity and how much fun they seemed to be having. They have a website, and they do their “market” work on the weekends. They’ve become friendly with the other vendors, and the number one conversation topic is which restaurants are the best in the area. We always ask the locals about their favorite restaurants and have found some real gems that the “tourists” haven’t discovered yet.
If you have a hobby or interest, why not look into the possibility of creating an extra income through your activities? The beauty of technology is that you no longer have to go to a job for a specific shift anymore. With a website, your business can almost run itself, and you can work on it when it fits your schedule. As we said, finding extra money in retirement can be as easy as uncluttering your home and finding someone who will buy your “clutter”. That’s a win-win situation in my book and it may have a very positive impact on your finances and lifestyle. Who couldn’t use that? Although retirement is a time to relax and enjoy life, it doesn’t mean you have to stop living! Make your hobbies your job and, if you can create a little extra income on the side, why not do it? You’ll be surprised at how exciting it is to have a little extra money coming in. Why not become one of the new entrepreneurial retirees? It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
