Let’s be honest. We have less time left in our lives than we did yesterday. For those of us who have been fortunate enough to survive and make it to our golden years, the message is clear: it’s time to get busy and live life in retirement and make the most of every day. I love to read and am constantly inspired by the wise people who went before us. I keep a book of quotations that I refer to many times during a week because the words provide a wisdom that keeps me focused and inspired to live the best life that I can. More than one quote comes from Henry David Thoreau and the one I think I’m most determined to live by is “most men live lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” It is a constant reminder for me to make the most of this gift of life we’ve all been given. My “song” has been my determination to see as much of this world as I can. Ever since I can remember, seeing pictures of far-off places appealed to me in a way that is still hard to describe. I needed to see these locations for myself. I loved history and read about the White House and the Capitol, and those places were part of school trips that lived up to all of my expectations. I was mesmerized by these places and the pictures that I took proved it. Every time the Washington Monument came into view, I felt the need to take a picture of it. I was determined to travel and live the life that I imagined and that is my advice to anyone who makes it to retirement.
We all need to get busy and live life in retirement and do whatever you have a calling or passion to do. Don’t die with that song still inside you as Mr. Thoreau said so eloquently. Those desires to see fairly local sites like Washington D.C., expanded to places like the Grand Canyon, Europe and the Panama Canal. Photographing the Northern Lights and koalas became realities that I still can’t believe that I did. Visiting the ruins of ancient civilizations in Greece and Italy and our own southwest deserts were experiences that still bring a smile when I recall them. For me, seeing the world was my mission and it is still an ongoing project. I happen to believe that everyone has an inner desire that needs to be nurtured, and retirement is the ideal time to do it. This website is my attempt to help people do exactly that. Our lives are a tapestry of different experiences and emotions that have created the most unique specimen in the world: YOU! There’s no one like you. There never has been and never will be. That is a proven fact. You need to get at least some of that inner song out into the world in a way of your own choosing. I believe it will give you greater joy than you could ever imagine.
Have you ever dreamed of writing a song or playing an instrument? Have you ever seen yourself flying a plane or sailing the high seas? Find a way to make it happen! And, if it can’t happen exactly the way you imagined, modify that dream to adapt to reality. Did you want to play shortstop for the Chicago Cubs? Join a senior league and become a part of a group of people who are having the time of their life. Are you too old to pursue a pilot’s license? Get a drone with a camera and experience “flight” through the photographs and movies that you take. The possibilities are endless, and you can become as creative as you have a mind to be. Don’t let your dream die and don’t go to the grave with your song still inside you. Get busy living in retirement because, if you don’t do it now, when exactly were you going to cross off those things on your bucket list?
The secret is to take action. Grab a calendar and start making plans. Develop a step by step project plan and then make it happen. Your dreams make you who you are and you are never complete until you give each of your dreams a fair shot. Will they all come true? Maybe not, but I guarantee you’ll have fun trying to make them happen and isn’t that what life is all about? Not everyone will become a superstar, but local theaters are full of people who get a thrill being part of a play or performance. The streets of New Orleans have bands on every corner, and I think every member of those bands would be out there even if no money came into those jars that they have on display. Some of them have CDs for sale and that is a dream come true for many of them. Technology has made far-fetched fantasies a reality. “Newscasters” and media stars are born every day through their own websites or podcasts. There’s no time like the present. Get busy living life in retirement and don’t waste another day. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
