Happiness Is A State Of Mind

Life is a struggle for many people.  There is always something to complain about and something that keeps them from being happy.  I fully admit that I was once one of those people.  I absolutely hated my job.  But it was clear to me that, since I would be working at it for many years, I would have to find a way to get through each day.  My desperation was a blessing because it led me to explore the Self-Help section of the bookstore.  Some wonderful authors led me on a journey where I learned that happiness is a state of mind.  The world and how you see it is a product of your mind and thinking process.  We spend a lot of time conditioning our bodies through a proper diet and an exercise program and don’t realize that our brains and inner spirit need the same care.  This is true for everyone for their entire life but I’m beginning to think that those who are retired or approaching this wonderful time in their life might need to hear this as much as any group that’s out there.

Happiness is a state of mind, and you can control your thoughts and feelings with practice.

Too many people seem to think that their life is controlled by what’s happening around them.  If things are going well, then they’re happy and all is right with the world.  It’s a game changer when you realize that life isn’t what happens to you but, rather, how you respond to it.  The great people in the world look at everything as an opportunity rather than a crisis and some of the turning points in history happened after a disaster.  The Second World War is a great example of this.  The rise of Hitler in Europe and the attack on Pearl Harbor were dark moments that seemed destined to end democracy and freedom as we know it.  It’s possible that, without Winston Churchill, Great Britain might not have had the will to fight.  The partnership between Franklin Roosevelt and Churchill is credited by many historians as the turning point during a time when Germany seemed destined to control the world.  The leadership of Roosevelt and Churchill united their respective countries and made victory seem like a sure thing.  We were no longer just under attack, we were fighting for democracy and freedom, and we were doing it against a regime that had been built on thinking that some of their fellow human beings had no right to exist.  The people of England and America had a completely different state of mind than the people of Germany.  It was a matter of perspective, but it became their reality.  The mind is a complicated network of thoughts that can be controlled. Your thoughts and your perspective can be shaped by others, but they can also be shaped by you.  Indeed, happiness is a state of mind but so is fear, anger and unhappiness.  Control your mind and you control your world.

Roosevelt and Churchill

I learned about this philosophy and became determined to change my own world.  If happiness is a state of mind, and I do believe that it is, I was determined to control my thinking and find it.  While many people scoff at this idea, I can tell you that it works and is worth whatever it takes to master these techniques.  Your whole world will change and believe me, people will notice.  You’ll wonder why this isn’t taught in our schools and universities as a pre-requisite for life.  People have no problem believing that an exercise program and healthy diet will help them lose weight and get into better condition physically.  Why do we think our minds and spirit are any different.  In a very real way, our thoughts are controlled by what we expose our minds to.  If we don’t make an effort to control our mental intake, we will be at the mercy of whatever we put our focus on throughout the day.  Sometimes this can be extremely dangerous.  The internet can be a black hole of hate, despair, anger and conspiracy theories that lead you to believe that we’re lucky to be alive in a world that is falling apart and spiraling downward.  You can choose what state of mind you want to live in by feeding your mind differently.  As one of my favorite authors always said, you can view March 20th as the first day of a beautiful spring with flowers blooming all around you or as the last day of a long, hard and freezing winter.  The choice is yours because happiness is a state of mind.

Double Rainbow

So, how do you make those changes in your life?  If your brain is filled with negative thoughts, you have to fill it with positive ones.  Look around for authors who will guide you down a more positive path.  The good thing is that this type of wisdom is ageless, so you don’t have to find the newest trendy author.  The source for much of this type of teaching is the Bible so don’t be surprised to see it referenced by some of the great philosophers of our day.  Henry David Thoreau was one of the first American practitioners of what some people call New Age thinking but there have been many others.  The book that started me on this path was the Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale but I quickly found others who had an even greater impact on me by teaching me that happiness is a state of mind and I’m the only one who can control it.  These included Wayne Dyer, Zig Ziglar, Bob Proctor, Jim Rohn and Anthony Robbins.  Some of these authors specifically relate it to finances, which was of particular interest to me, and the single best book on that is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.  It can also be faith related, and you can't get more inspirational than the Bible and the words of Jesus.  People still follow him two thousand years later.

The more you read and learn, the more you understand that your thoughts control your world.  Happiness is a state of mind and, once you understand that, your whole world changes.  People need to hear that, and they have to constantly work at it.  It’s one of the reasons I started this website.  By writing about it, I also reinforce it into my sometimes very thick head.  Maybe that will be true for you as well.  You might be the next author people refer to.  If more people understood this, it would truly change the world.  Get started today.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
