When the question arises about how retirees should invest their money, you can find a wide variety of opinions and strategies. If you look closely, however, there is one common theme that emerges and that is to diversify. The best strategy involves having your money distributed across stocks, bonds and even safer investments to guard your money as well as possible and customizing your portfolio to reflect your risk tolerance. We’ve all heard the saying “don’t put all of your eggs in one basket” and, although it might seem like a gross simplification, there is a lot of truth to it.

The best return over the years has been with stocks but that’s also the area that has seen the most volatility. Bonds are a safer return in that they are more predictable, but you will have a lower return in general. Stocks that pay a dividend are very attractive because they will not only generate an income, but they can also give you growth on top of their payout. A good financial advisor will advise you on the best strategy after asking you how much risk you are willing to take. They deal with the question of how retirees should invest their money every day and should have a background that will help you navigate your way through these important questions.
There are safer financial instruments like annuities, certificates of deposit and high yield investment accounts but the return is significantly lower. You are paying for peace of mind and, when you invest your money into these instruments, you agree to a rate of return ahead of time with no risk to your investment. An annuity is a little bit different and usually more expensive. Here, the rate of return may be higher and your income guaranteed but there is usually a cost associated with this option and needs to be carefully analyzed. If you are working with an advisor who will make a commission when they move your money into a particular investment, that should send up a red flag and trigger a call to get an unbiased second opinion. When you look at how retirees should invest their money, there is a lot to consider, especially with the advisors that you utilize. Understand their fee structure completely before you invest.

You can also consider investing in yourself in a couple of different ways. We work with three different advisors since we had our retirement accounts distributed that way from employment days and continue to use their advisory services. It is a great way to make sure you’re diversified and it’s interesting to compare the different strategies they utilize. But I also kept a small amount of money for my own investment hobby, and it has kept me engaged with the markets and made me more knowledgeable when I have the periodic calls with each investor. I subscribe to a couple of different investment newsletters and truly enjoy studying the markets around the world and keeping track of the hottest stocks in the growing sectors of the economy. I am quite pleased with how I’ve done and on a couple of investments I wish I had invested more but that’s the secret to a sound investment strategy that I’ve read about over the years. Diversification is the critical theme to follow, and the reality is that we all wish we had found those hidden Microsoft or Amazon stocks and rode them all the way to the bank. I have found investing to be a great hobby and when I look at how retirees should invest their money, I have gained a knowledge that allows me to have an informed opinion.

The other way you can invest in yourself is to start a little business on the side. Maybe it’s investing or maybe you go out and become a certified financial planner. You wouldn’t be the first retiree to start their own business. Start a little newsletter with your own stock picks and see what happens. You have to start somewhere and whether it’s investment oriented or not a business of your own can add some excitement to your life if you feel you need some of that. Retirees just like you are starting their own business on the internet every day of the week and, in fact, I’m one of them. This small undertaking has given me hours of enjoyment and allowed me to write about almost anything I want from traveling around the world to learning how to cook a great meal or advising my readers on how retirees should invest their money. You should at least look into it because we’re not getting any younger and it’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
