Keep Learning In Retirement

My advice to everyone is to keep learning in retirement.  You’ll never get old.  Learning new things can make every day exciting and there is no end to what you can learn or what you can become.  The world changes at a dizzying pace and it becomes harder to stay engaged and up to date.  I remember how my father felt like the world had passed him by during his final years and now I see how some of my aging friends are starting to feel the same way.  There are a few ways to prevent this from happening to you.

I always begin with traveling as the best way to learn new things and I still maintain that it represents an education that is better than almost any classroom experience. A well-planned trip will allow you to keep learning in retirement and have fun at the same time. Traveling gives you insight into the rest of the world and provides an instant connection to the places you’ve been.  It used to be that a storm or crisis in another part of the world meant almost nothing to us.  Since we’ve retired, however, we’ve been fortunate to visit many parts of the world and now those headlines take on a greater meaning.  When they talk about a worker’s strike in France, we’ve experienced the effects firsthand and a recent shark attack in Australia occurred not far from where we had visited.  It’s amazing how travel can make the world seem so much smaller.  You can learn a great deal about the people and how they live and it’s incredibly entertaining to expand your horizons by sampling the regional foods in a particular area.  Even better, get a good local guide to enhance your experience.  If you’ve spent the money to travel halfway across the world, a couple of extra hundred dollars spent on a private guided tour is well worth the cost and you won’t believe how much more you can learn.

Travel is a great way to keep learning in retirement.

Technology is another great way to keep learning in retirement.  Learning what technology can provide is the best place to start and the internet might be the biggest change in our world in my lifetime.  I know that it has its shortcomings and there are inherent dangers that exist in misinformation, but it has opened up a world of learning that is absolutely incredible and there is almost nothing that you can’t find out.  I remember doing research for term papers and spending endless hours in the school library trying to find the right information to include in my project.  I am amazed at how much you can find and how quickly you can find it just by sitting in front of your computer in the privacy and comfort of your own home.  And it doesn't have to be information on an important subject.  For example, if you want to review a past World Series and relive some memories from your youth, you can find what you’re looking for on the internet and it’s usually free of charge.  I have to confess that I’ve “wasted” more than a few hours that turned into days that turned into weeks reliving old football games, fights and even old television shows.  If you want to watch a Perry Mason episode one more time or watch Zorro save the day again, you can do it and have a lot of fun in the process.

While some people might not consider that “learning”, it can be a very enjoyable experience.  But, if you’re determined to keep learning in retirement, that’s easy enough to do as well.  Name the subject and I can almost guarantee that there are great resources to be found on the internet.  From religion to history to literature and entertainment, there are courses and forums that provide hours of high-quality presentations that can be viewed right from your home.  The subjects covered in Masterclass are excellent and extremely well presented.  Anyone who has read through the pages on this website knows that I think retirement is a great opportunity to do the things you always wanted to do but couldn’t because the demands of “life” got in the way of your dreams.  Now, you can fill in those gaps with no problem at all.  Did you want to become a gourmet chef?  There are courses for that as well as improving your golf game, writing a novel or just getting a more positive outlook on life.  Almost no subject is avoided and, quite often, there is someone who has a YouTube channel about how to do almost anything you can imagine.  It’s an amazing world we live in, and I encourage everyone to become an active participant rather than a bored spectator.  Go out and relive your dreams.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
