One of the most frustrating things in life in my opinion is someone who just drains the life out of you with their negativity. Something could always be better no matter how perfect it may seem. I think a lot of people would enjoy life more if they could learn how to be happy. It’s amazing how so many people turn into professional critics and are never satisfied with something. I know that many people regard the constant desire to improve as a key ingredient to success but celebrate and appreciate the good things in life. I’m convinced that some people could win the lottery and do nothing but complain about the fact that they had to pay taxes or that the prize isn’t really what they claim it is because, if you take a lump sum payment instead of the twenty-year annuity arrangement, it’s much less. I’m sure you know people like that, and my advice is to avoid them if at all possible. They will drain you.
I honestly believe that it is possible to learn how to be happy. As you may have found out as a previous reader of this website, I was one of those people who always looked at a glass being half empty and I still have to work hard to maintain a positive attitude. It may be why I am so sensitive to the people who can change the mood of a party with just a few comments. The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale was one of the first books I read on the topic, and I remember telling someone who was prone to negativity about the useful perspective that the book was bringing to my own life and that some of exercises described made a lot of sense. His reply was that “I tried positive thinking, and it doesn’t work!” Needless to say, I avoided the topic with him in the future. But it didn’t stop me from going down that path and it has made a big difference.
Your thoughts control your world. I am convinced of that. It’s not what happens to us but, rather, how we react to what happens that impacts us. I’m the first to acknowledge that tragedies happen and that the loss of a loved one can be devastating. But, even in that case, there is a thought process that can lead us on to a journey of recovery. Is it easy? No. It’s one of the most difficult things to overcome but your thought process will enable you to recover from just about anything in time. You can learn how to be happy or at least accept what life has given you.
If you’re fortunate you know someone who has impacted those around him or her with their indomitable spirit. History is filled with leaders who have stood above a crisis and led people through to victory. The story of Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt immediately comes to mind. When Roosevelt told the nation at the height of the Depression that the only thing they had to fear was fear itself, it changed the mood of the entire country. And when England faced the attack of Nazi Germany, Churchill’s pledge to his country to never surrender inspired that nation to hold on through nighttime bombings that shook London to its core. They were masters of inspiration. As a matter of fact, Churchill suffered from depression and Roosevelt had to overcome infantile paralysis so they both knew what they were speaking about. Many pictures show Roosevelt with a huge smile and Churchill with a victory sign. Not only did each of them learn how to be happy, but they also inspired their fellow citizens through one of the most perilous times in world history. We owe them more than we know.
I continued my journey of self-help reading and did my best to learn how to be happy through the writings of Wayne Dyer, Matthew Kelly, Bob Proctor and Zig Ziglar to name a few. The amazing thing is that I use what I learned almost every day because they changed my approach to life. I changed from having emotional reactions to formulating thoughtful responses and, whenever I am to do this, the outcome has always been better. If you tend to a person who sees clouds on every horizon, I encourage to explore this area of self-improvement. It won’t just improve your own life, but the people around you will notice the difference as well. There is joy and wonder all around us if we know where to look. Life is too short to look at just the problems and limitations. We need to explore all the possibilities and Enjoy Retired Life!
