I have always been a proponent of keeping busy in retirement and I believe a full schedule is a big contributor in keeping active and learning new things. But I also know that there’s such a thing as being too busy. Instead of rushing from place to place looking for that “ultimate experience” that will lead to eternal happiness, why don’t you learn to slow down, savor life’s great pleasures and let happiness find you? It’s easier than you think when you remember what’s important in life. It’s not the material things we accumulate around us. It’s not the vacation to the “hottest” vacation spots. It’s not the best seats in the house at the Super Bowl. The most important things in life are the relationships we treasure and the people we love. It’s always a good practice to stop and remember all the people in our life who have let us experience the most profound emotion of all: love.
Whether it the love of your parents, spouse or children, those relationships should always be nurtured and never taken for granted. When we reach this stage in life, we come to realize what’s really important in life but sometimes don’t realize how life can change in an instant. We need to embrace those moments with the people we love and love the people we’re with. Slow down those moments and enjoy them to the fullest and you’ll realize what it means to let happiness find you instead of forcing it into a situation. I think the best feeling in the world is to fall in love with another human being and have that love returned. It can happen in an instant as it does with the birth of a child. You immediately become devoted to this infant who is totally dependent upon you and is the cutest creation you’ve ever seen. Love can also take time to develop like when two people are attracted to each other and form a relationship that blossoms into love. If they’re lucky and they work at it, that love is all they will ever need to get through a lifetime. When they have children, that love that exists in that family can be the closest thing we get to in comprehending the love of our Creator. If you can appreciate all of those feelings, you will know what it’s like to let happiness find you.
I’m sure there are people reading this who think I’ve gone off the deep end but, after over seventy years of living, I feel like I’m just beginning to get an idea of the magnificence of this experience we call Life. If you think about the vastness of the universe and the millions of years of existence and can’t feel a sense of wonder and awe, I’m not sure you’ve given life much of an effort. How do you look up at the moon and stars and not contemplate the endless perfection that keeps our planet circling around the sun since the beginning of time. Look under a microscope and see the smallest of organisms that are a product of that same creative force and realize how lucky you are to be a part of this world of wonder. It’s a miracle that we don’t take the time to appreciate often enough. Spending time in gratitude for our mere existence is a wonderful way to let happiness find you.
It’s also a way to appreciate the life we have and to try to make the most of it. We’ve been put on this planet for a reason, and we should not only explore the world we live in but our inner self as well. I believe we are all here for a reason. This journey we call life is our own adventure to find out what it is. It might be to bring happiness to the people around us or even to expand that mission to have an even greater impact. How do you do that? By sharing a little bit of yourself with others. Perhaps it’s with a good deed or a kind word. Maybe it’s a book you might write or a painting or drawing that you share. We’re all unique creations and there are things that you can do that no one else can. Share yourself with the people around you and let them know how you feel. When we reach this age, we know life can end tomorrow so why not do it today? Start making every day count and cherish the time with the people you love. Let happiness find you by taking the time to make those precious moments count. There’s no time to waste. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
