Life is a mystery. Have you figured it out yet? If you have, drop me a line because I’d love to hear what your conclusions are. The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know. The more I learn about the vast geography of our planet and the universe that we’re all a part of, the more I realize what an absolute miracle our creation is. One picture from the Hubbell telescope showing the galaxies that make up our universe can make anyone feel incredibly small and wonder what part they play in this incredible mystery we call life.

You reach retirement age only after decades of work that was preceded by a dozen or more years of education (although we should never stop learning) and now look around the world you live in and are at a complete loss sometimes about how we got here and, more importantly, how we’re going to survive. The world can be a little crazy sometimes and, if you study history, you realize it’s always been like this. There have been times when the world seemed like it was on the brink of darkness between the plague, invasions, world wars and climate changes that threaten our wildlife. We read about pre-historic dinosaurs and realize the world didn’t always look like this. This planet is millions of years old and, if you could travel at the speed of light, you could travel billions of years and never get close to the end. Then you start to wonder how do we even know such things? There are some very smart people who have pieced together our history and are learning more about it every day. I am constantly amazed by the new findings of science and what they’re learning about our past, discovering about our present and forecasting for our future. Are they always right? Of course not. But I’m very thankful that people devote their lives to studying things like archeology, biology, physics and ancient civilizations so that we can gain a better understanding of today. Sometimes I sit in my own little world, rather proud of some of the things I’ve been able to, and then I read about the history of ancient civilizations or a new discovery from a space satellite, and I realize how smart people of the past were and how brilliant some of the people living today are. I feel very inadequate sometimes, but it motivates me to learn as much as I can about the world we live in. Life is a mystery but it’s everyone’s responsibility to try to solve it – at least for themselves.
The ability to travel has been a source of great enjoyment and learning. It was the experience of a lifetime to walk through the remnants of ancient Greece and Rome. You cannot help but marvel at the contributions these civilizations made to our existence and how much influence they still have on us today. We should honor our past and those who came before us. The great thinkers and philosophers raised issues and questions that are still being debated today. Life is a mystery, but it was something that they attempting to solve thousands of years ago. The great artists of the Renaissance changed the world, and we have wonderfully creative people who continue to change it today. It is one of the most rewarding things you can do when you take the time to appreciate the wisdom that came before us. The founding fathers of our own country used the governments of the past including Greece and Rome to build the democracy that we live in today. With all the debates that we’ve seen recently, it’s interesting to think about what those ancient leaders would have to say. And you don’t have to go back too far in our own history to find challenging points of view and perspectives that shed light on our present-day controversies. Every challenge we face today has had a similar occurrence in our past. Life is indeed a mystery, but our past always provides clues about today’s situation.

Many people think that history was a boring subject they made you study in school and science and physics were for smart students, but nothing could be further from the truth. Taking the time to understand some of the great civilizations of the past and the impact of some of the great discoveries in technology and science can help you develop an appreciation for all the intellectual giants who made contributions that we still use today. Instead of focusing on the legends of sports or cinema, maybe it’s time to give the great thinkers of the past their due. They have left us a wonderful world to explore so go out and do it. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
