Live Your Passion in Retirement

There are too many people in this world who lived out their life by doing what other people told them to do.  I think everyone should live their passion in retirement.  After forty years of working for some company or institution and being paid just enough to get you to come back the next day, don’t you think that it’s time to explore your inner desires and spend your days doing what you want to do?  The sad part is that most people are not really sure of what they want to do.  They’ve forgotten their dreams, and many feel they’re too old to pursue them.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  You may have to make some adjustments, but anything you fantasized about can come back in your life with a little creativity.  Did you dream of playing centerfield for the New York Yankees?  They may not have room for you in the Bronx, but the chances are good that you can find a place in a senior league and recapture some of the joys of youth.  Did you ever dream about winning the Master’s?  Augusta may be out of the picture at this point, but it will still be very satisfying to win a trophy at your local country club. It’s time to live your passion in retirement.

Many retired people think their best days are behind them.  I don’t see it that way.  I think everyone should live their passion in retirement.  So many people are afraid to try something new and possibly fail.  How many novels don’t get written?  How many paintings never make it to a canvas.  I believe everyone has a message and a reason to live.  I believe everyone is driven toward something that holds their interest in a way that is almost unexplainable.  Watch a runner in the park or a surfer riding a wave.  Watch a gardener at work or a musician at a keyboard lose themselves in their passion.  They have a need to do what they’re doing.  They don’t even have to be good at it.  But they have to do it.  It’s sad how many people have abandoned their passion.  They’re afraid of what others might think or are afraid of not fulfilling their own expectations.  It’s time to live your passion in retirement. I believe retirement is a time for fulfilling that need.  It may never be something that you tell anyone about but do yourself a favor and take the time to do a little self-examination.  If you wanted to learn a language, play an instrument, build furniture or travel the world, do it!  Make a decision to live your passion in retirement.

Live Your Passion in Retirement Starting Today

I have found that travel is a way to fulfill an important part of my inner ambitions.  I need to see different places and experience new things.  History has always held a fascination to me and when I am able to see the location where a major event took place, there is an inner satisfaction that is hard for me to explain.  Seeing the Parthenon, the D-Day battlefields and cemeteries and the Alamo were all very impactful.  I have no doubt that this was how I was meant to spend my retirement. One of my favorite literary characters is Dracula and visiting Transylvania was very exciting.  I was amazed at how many fellow Dracula fans there were!  I am extremely fortunate that my wife enjoys traveling as well and has indulged me in my quest to see specific historical sites.  As long as there’s no tests or papers to write, she’s quite happy to watch her husband make history come alive.  Having a nice lunch or dinner afterwards helps quite a bit.

We enjoy traveling and we both regard it as one of our great enjoyments in life. It’s hard to say that it’s a passion until we think about all the things that come with it.  Our trips always involve dining out and trying different foods.  We try to take in a play and visit an interesting museum.  Most of all, we take the time to enjoy each other's company.  We realize not everyone gets to this age.  Not everyone gets to enjoy retirement.  It would be terrible to waste this precious gift of time.  So, in a very real sense we are, indeed, living out our passion.  Taking the time to experience new places, eat in wonderful restaurants and enjoy life together is something that we are truly grateful for.  What could be better than that?  Your interests may be different.  That’s what makes life so interesting.  I love to hear people who are making the most of this incredible time in their life.  I know someone who is visiting every Major League ballpark and seeing a game with his son.  That’s not my passion but it’s certainly his.  I told him he should capture every moment in pictures and, maybe, start a blog.  After all, not too many people have seen a game in every stadium.  It makes him something of an expert.

The real question, however, is what are your interests?  What gets you excited?  Let’s be realistic, if you don’t take a step in that direction now, when will you start.  You should live your passion in retirement.  It’s time to get started.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
