Living the Dream in Retirement

Everyone should be living the dream in retirement.  You spent all of your life working for this day so you should make every day count and keep your options open.  Don’t give up on your dreams and never let your age keep you from doing something that you really want to do.  After all, age is just a number.  I know some people well into their seventies who have the mind of a twenty-year-old.  Although that might not always be a good thing, keeping a youthful outlook can have a very positive impact on your outlook on life.

One of the most important things in keeping a positive outlook is to be grateful for everything that you have.  Be thankful that you reached this age at all.  Many people were not this lucky.  One of the things I do each day is to look at what happened on this day in history.  Any event on the list can keep me occupied for the whole day when I realize I don’t know very much about that event or person.  On the website with all the historical dates is also a list of whose birthday it is and who died on this day.  You come across some very famous people who did not live very long lives at all.  When I come across someone who died at my current age, I get a little thoughtful about how fortunate I am to have lived as long as I have.  And we never know when our time will be up.  That may sound a little morbid, but I use it to enter into an attitude of gratitude, and you will be surprised at how that can turn your whole outlook around.  It’s just something to consider.  It will help you get on track to living the dream in retirement.  It can also help you define what the dream is if you haven’t done that already.

Living the dream in retirement is under your control.

Living the dream in retirement is a very personal experience.  Don’t worry about anyone else.  Make sure you live out YOUR dream and, if you’re not sure what that dream is, you are precisely the type of person I designed this website for.  I think retirement is the time to make sure you’ve tried all of the things you thought about trying and to search your memory for that lost fantasy and then take a shot at making it happen.  Did you want to be an actor or actress?  Check out the local theaters and see what productions they’re working on.  Our daughter has never given up on her dream of being on Broadway and has appeared in dozens of productions.  She has gotten wonderful reviews and a tremendous sense of satisfaction when she has taken on a challenging role and excelled at it.  In the process, she has come across many seniors who are living their own dream by appearing in these productions as well.  They’re having the time of their life, and she has given music lessons to those who always had a dream of playing an instrument.  It’s never too late to start living the dream in retirement.

A friend of mine has always enjoyed learning the guitar and has taken a number of lessons to get himself stage ready because he also has a dream of being a songwriter.  He is a regular at the local talent night in his neighborhood bar.  The same is true with another one of my friends who is part of an Irish Band.  You can’t talk to him during the month of March or almost any weekend night because he’s that busy.  He’s definitely living the dream in retirement.  But it doesn’t have to be just music.

My wife always wanted to start woodworking, and she has become very accomplished in her little hobby.  She loves every minute of it and always has a new project in mind.  A neighbor of ours built his own canoe from scratch and has created an absolutely beautiful work of art.  If you listen to him describe how he designed it and procured the wood for it, you realize this was something he truly enjoyed doing.

Retirement isn’t for sitting back and watching television.  It’s for getting out and doing all the things you thought about while you suffered through your days at work hoping someday you escape from the grind and live out your dream.  Did you have any hobbies when you were younger?  Photography, model building, toy soldiers, writing or card collecting?  It’s never too late to re-visit that lost activity and bring back the memories.  I still like simulated sports games, and I will never tire of experiencing Mickey Mantle hitting another home run even if it is on a fantasy team.  If it brings a smile to your face – do it!  This is the time in your life to have fun.

Living the dream in retirement for my wife and me means traveling.  We have traveled more than we ever thought possible and have had more fun on our trips than we can describe.  We live in an absolutely beautiful world, and we are determined to experience as much of it as we can.  What’s your dream?  Take a look around this website and see if you can get any ideas so that you can start living the dream in retirement.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
