We’ve all heard the advice that it’s important to maintain your health in retirement but how do you go about doing that? We know a healthy diet is important and every doctor will tell you to get a good night’s sleep and exercise regularly, but I have found that I need more than that to not only be healthy but also to feel healthy. Aging is not for the faint of heart. Over time your body wears down and there can be days that even walking becomes a struggle. I have learned to do my own research into ways of maximizing my health and improving the way I feel. I will tell you right from the start that I am not a doctor and am totally unqualified to offer advice, but I can tell you about some things that have worked for me.

I am a believer in exercise but, after you’ve reached your sixties, it shouldn’t be strenuous. I walk on the treadmill regularly and only do it because of the music that I listen to. All my favorites inspire me to show up every day to walk my two miles at least four times a week. When I don’t do it, I can feel the difference, so I know it works. What I also know works is adding supplements to my daily vitamins to reduce inflammation. Here’s where my own research plays an important part. Our doctor never said not to take the vitamins or supplements, but he would also say he had no information on whether they worked or not. That always seemed surprising to me, but the fact is that there’s no research studies to show the effectiveness of these types of additions to your diet because there is no money in it. The money for those big studies is from the giant pharmaceutical companies who have a lot more profit at stake when it comes to curing diseases than keeping people healthy with supplements that cost a couple of dollars a day compared to thousands of dollars a month. If you want to maintain your health in retirement, I am a firm believer that you need to become your own advocate.
Inflammation can significantly damage your health in many ways. If you have chronic inflammation, you owe it to yourself to get relief in some way and, if you suffer from constant pain, you probably have at some point. You may have done your own research and found your own solution. While there are certainly prescriptions that doctors can write, I have always tried to find natural solutions first. I firmly believe there are things in nature that have not been used to their fullest potential. The native tribes all over the world had their own ways of curing illness and some of them have been shown to be successful. I’ve tried a few of them out and have adopted some of these natural supplements into my daily regime and I encourage everyone to do the same as part of their effort to maintain their health in retirement.

You have to keep in mind that what works for one person may not work for you but that shouldn’t stop you from exploring the world of natural supplements that thousands of people believe in even though there is no scientific study to determine their effectiveness. Our doctor always said that, if you can feel the difference, whatever you’re taking is supplying something your body needs. Retirement is wonderful except for that part about aging. At this point in my life, I fully admit that I need a little extra help to fight those aches and pains and help my body’s immune system to function at its best. Getting a good night of sleep has become a bit more of a challenge but I want to be careful not to take anything that I will become dependent on. I have found some supplements that work for me and I think everyone should look into researching what’s out there. While there are great prescriptions that can cost a bundle, there may be some ways to alleviate your symptoms as well. Always consult your doctor but don’t be surprised if he or she says that there is no research to determine the effectiveness of the supplement you’re considering. I suggest you do whatever you can to maintain your health in retirement and that includes becoming your own advocate.
