If you take the time to explore this website, you’ll learn that I’m a big believer in learning and doing new things. This keeps your mind sharp and is the best antidote against that horrible state of mind we call boredom. I get a little frustrated when I hear someone say that they’re bored in retirement. My first question always is: how can you be bored? Look around you! There are too many new things to learn and do and more places to explore than you can possibly get to in a lifetime. Learn a new skill, start a new hobby or explore a place you’ve never been before. Write a book or the next best-selling novel. Write a song or learn to play an instrument in retirement. Do you know how your life can change when you can read music and set a goal to play your favorite musical piece with competence. You enter a whole new world when you can read music and entertain an audience.

I know two people who became determined to learn how to play an instrument in retirement and they’re having a great time doing it. Both were two very nice gentlemen that I worked with a long time ago but we’ve stayed in touch through the years. One guy was driven by his need to write songs. He loved the great lyricists in the country-folk music arena and started to think about turning this passion into a hobby as he approached the end of his working career. It turned out that he had more talent than he thought and a good ear for music. He made great progress with a good teacher and became good enough to match his chords to the lyrics he was writing. He went to a song writing boot camp and did very well in the “final exam” with one of his own compositions. He even got enough nerve to perform at an open mike night in a local bar and was very well received. He sent a video clip of the performance, and I was very impressed. Who knows, we might hear about that new country star who is about sixty years old and having the time of his life. Learning to play an instrument in retirement might be just what you need to bring excitement into your life.
My other friend has gotten quite as far but his instrument of preference is also the guitar. He has no interest in singing but was a huge fan of Les Paul during his teenage years. He had an old guitar that he used to play around with but never took any lessons. Now, he has his eyes on a used guitar he saw in a music shop window (yes, they still exist but are not too common), and he’s going to make that his Christmas present to himself. He’s gotten a little bit of pushback from one of his sons who thinks he’s out of his mind to spend that kind of money on something you don’t know how to play but he’s determined to make music a part of his life. When I talked to him last week, he said it was something he always wanted to do. I immediately told him to go ahead and do it. That is the philosophy behind this whole website. I believe everyone has something that has been in the back of their mind that they really want to try but either have never gotten around to it or were a little scared to act on it. That’s a shame. Retirement gives you the free time you were always lacking when you were working. Retirement is the time to explore your hidden desires and talents. There’s a creative spirit inside everyone if they’re willing to let it come out. You may not want to learn how to play an instrument in retirement, but what about painting, woodworking, sculpting, stained glass making or writing? There is something very fulfilling about doing something creative and new. It opens new doors, and you may find out something about yourself that you never knew before.

Retirement is our reward in life. We spent decades working for other people so why take this as an opportunity to do something completely different and rewarding? Why not learn something new or explore this incredible world that we live in. Life is way too short to spend hours in front of the television. Explore your inner self and have some fun in the process. Take a cooking class and learn to cook a gourmet meal or take a woodworking class and build a canoe. Restore an antique car or learn how to make wine. There’s no limit to what you can do except for the limits you place on yourself. Just go out and give it a try. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
