One of the great joys of retirement is being able to do almost anything you want any time you want to do it. You are completely free to start a new hobby or re-visit an old one. One of the questions I get asked a lot is whether or not you can make money from your hobby. The answer is yes and there are many profitable retirement hobbies that have led to a nice income for people who are retired. There’s almost an unlimited number of ways you can make this happen and the path you take is related to the hobby that you want to turn into an income.
Golf is probably one of the most popular retirement hobbies and you can turn your passion for the sport into an advantage when it comes to the traditional way of making money which is through employment at a store or golf course. Retirees make some of the best employees a company can find because the typical senior who is looking for a little extra money is reliable, experienced and is somebody who wants to be there. Golf is usually their passion, and they bring an expertise and enthusiasm to the job that makes them a natural salesperson. In this regard, golf is one of the most profitable retirement hobbies because of the many opportunities that exist for employment. It can be at a huge department store (although you’ll be dealing with other things rather than just golf), a pro shop or working as a part time employee at a country club. Some seniors are more interested in the discounted rounds of golf than the hourly wage, but there is no doubt that jobs like this do exist.
If you’ve looked around this website, you won’t be surprised that my first choice in creating an extra income would NOT be a job of any kind. After forty years of working in Corporate America, I do not want to be told what to do any more. I prefer creating an income on my own and there are many profitable retirement hobbies that will let you do just that. A friend of ours who is a master woodworker could easily turn his hobby into an income but, for him, it would take some of the joy out of the craftsmanship. Even though he’s been offered some sizable sums of money for some of his handiwork, to date his creations have been for members of his family. I’m still working on him but for now he appears quite content to pursue his hobby without the financial reward even though he knows how easy it would be to turn his hobby into an income.
We visit many little towns during our winter retirement journeys and have come across what can be described as craft malls. They’re like permanent flea markets but with nice little booths and some very upscale offerings. Jewelry making and stained glass are very popular but there are some wood workers as well who are making incredibly intricate tables, carving boards and even bird houses that are commanding some very high prices. Clearly these people have profitable retirement hobbies. More importantly, they’re having a lot of fun doing it. Some of them take it a step further and have websites where they sell their creations to a global marketplace. There’s no reason that couldn’t be you.
From soap makers to sauce makers, cottage industries are being started every day by people who love what they do and are finding ways to make money doing it. Their passions have been turned into a money-making enterprise. There’s an unbelievable number of seniors who have created websites or marketed their creations online and these profit generating websites have become their favorite hobby. If you have a passion for writing, your opportunities are almost unlimited. You can provide content for magazines or websites or write the next great American novel. Writing is one of the most profitable retirement hobbies there is.
This website is an example of turning a hobby into something that generates revenue, but the truth is that I would do it even if I didn’t make any money from it. I like to write, and I especially like to write about my favorite subject: enjoying retirement. When I look at what makes people happy, it usually involves being a part of something that gives them a feeling of accomplishment. The people who are happiest in retirement are the ones who end each day and point to something they did or created with a sense of satisfaction. They know it was a job well done. That’s the joy of a hobby. To be involved in something you love to do and feeling good about each day. Life is too short to just sit around. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
