It happens to almost everyone. You get into a little bit of a rut and life doesn’t seem to hold the same sense of satisfaction. It’s gotten too predictable. The same card game on Monday, pickleball on Tuesday and eating the same thing day after day. Everyone is a creature of habit and, although that can be comforting, sometimes it gets a little old. The good news is that you can recharge your retirement by doing something different and it doesn’t even have to be a drastic change. Just a little tweak here and there can get you back on track. There are five specific things you can look at to make sure your retirement is all that it should be.

The first thing you should look at is your social circles. Are you meeting enough people or do you need to make new friends? People are social creatures and, sometimes, the same people in the same set of circumstances can get a little repetitious. Are you playing the same card game with the same people week in and week out? This is nothing negative about the people. I’m sure they’re lovely or you wouldn’t be playing with them. Maybe you need a different card game or maybe you need to expand your social circle to make new friends. Joining a new club can be just the change you need. Remember, you can recharge your retirement by doing something different and it doesn’t have to be a major change. Many people expand their social circles by taking up another very worthwhile activity and that brings us to our next suggestion.
Volunteering at a hospital, church or other organization may be another way to shake up your life in a good way. Giving of your time and knowing that you’re making a difference is a great way to change your outlook. When you recharge your retirement by doing something different and you’re helping other people at the same time, you’ve got a win-win situation and don’t be surprised if you feel like you’re the one benefitting the most from your engagement with an organization that is dedicated to helping people. Just the fact that you’re going out and doing something different can enliven your whole personality. And, if a change of scenery is what you need, never overlook our favorite retirement activity at all: traveling.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to travel and change your outlook on life. In fact, some people spend a lot of money traveling the world and they’re still bored and there’s one primary reason for that. They’re just going through the motions and checking off the destinations on their travel list. You recharge your retirement by doing something different but that “something” has to have a purpose to it. That applies to traveling as well. When you go somewhere, have a purpose for your visit. Even if it’s to a local park, make it a point to see the wildlife or take note of the landscaping. Doing something different is always nice but learning to be present in the moment is the key. Many people become bored with life because they haven’t been engaged with life. They’re an observer instead of a participant. That’s the critical point to recharging your life. You want to revive your interest in something that’s going to get you to focus on something other than yourself. An activity that will help you pass the hours without even being aware of what else is going on around you. If that sounds like you should get a hobby, you’re right because finding the right hobby is the fourth way you can recharge your retirement by doing something different.

Now, if you already have a hobby or two, my question is when was the last time you challenged yourself within the scope of that particular activity? When was the last time you reassessed where you are and set another goal to accomplish? When you set goals and create motivation to increase your skill level, something amazing happens. You actually get better. Your inner spirit responds. A friend of ours never thought she’d get tired of golf, but she did. She reached a plateau and her scores were not improving. She thought about taking up tennis as a change of pace, but someone suggested taking some golf lessons first. That was four years ago and since that time she has taken four strokes off her handicap and won the club tournament twice. Her instructor gave her suggestions on how to improve and the hobby she was about to “put on the shelf” became revitalized again. A hobby should be a challenge and, whether we like it or not, that’s what keeps people energized in life. When we find boredom creeping into our life, it’s a sure sign that we’ve become complacent about what we’re doing each day and, more importantly, the fifth element to recharging our retirement is missing and it is actually part of each of the first four suggestions: learning new things.
The surest way to recharge your retirement by doing something different is to learn while you’re doing it. We should never stop learning new things. When we do, we lose our purpose for living. Humans were meant to strive toward something better in each phase of our life. By the time we get to retirement, most of our responsibilities have been taken care of and we finally get to do the things we always dreamed about but never had the time for. We can now live our dream but that dream has to have a purpose. We’ve been put on this earth for a reason and the journey we call life is our quest to find out what that reason is. I actually think retirement is a great opportunity to look back at our lives and realize that we have a lot to be thankful for. Finding a way to express our gratitude for what we’ve been given may be our purpose in life. It is a mystery waiting to be solved and you can have a lot of fun doing it. Recharge your retirement by doing something different and learn all that you can in the process. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
