Retire At Any Age!

This website is designed to help people get the most out of their retirement.  It suggests way to make your life more interesting and even adventurous once you’ve escaped from the working world.  But, in a sense, you can retire at any age.  At least from a lifestyle perspective.  People develop new interests and start new hobbies all the time and, quite often, they’re the most interesting people you’ll ever meet.  If you make it a point to fill your life with activities that will enrich your leisure time, you gain knowledge and a sense of fulfillment that people will sense the moment they meet you.  You don’t have to brag about what you’ve done or boast about your expertise.  It will come out quite naturally in conversation.  When you meet someone who is very proficient in a certain area, there’s a level of expertise that shines through whatever they’re doing.  You see that in good doctors or teachers and even in that home repair person who tells you why it’s worth doing something extra to avoid this problem from happening again.  You respect their knowledge and experience in their work.  Did you know that the same thing can happen when you devote your spare time to an interest or hobby and become an expert in that endeavor?  In a way, you’ve found a way to leave the pressures of a job and “escape” to your happy place where time seems to fly by.  When you’re able to do that, you can retire at any age.  My wife has always been fascinated with woodworking.  She has found it to be a rewarding and challenging hobby and has become very good at building little projects that have gotten great compliments from the visitors to our home.  Guess what happened?   She is now something of a mentor to a couple of her friends and they frequently compare project notes and share pictures of their latest creations.

If you’ve read through some of the pages in this website, you know I hate to hear about someone being bored in retirement.  I feel very sorry for them.  There is so much to learn and experience in the world that I have trouble sometimes knowing where to start.  I love to read and appreciate those who have mastered the written word whether it’s explaining a complicated subject in great detail or helping people overcome a personal problem with words of wisdom or writing a page turning novel that no one can put down.  There’s an art to that and I admire the talent, skill and hard work that it takes to produce something that brings a nod of approval from the reader.  Have you ever had a desire to be an expert on something?  It can be in almost any field you can imagine, and, through the years, I’ve met people with a level of expertise that I find to be very inspiring.  There was someone I worked with who had an uncanny knowledge of horse racing!  I thought he was just trying to impress me until we were on our way to a meeting that ended up being cancelled.  He ‘kidnapped” me and took me to Aqueduct and proceeded to place three winning bets and told what to watch for in each race.  I joined him in the fourth race, and we used our winnings to have a wonderful dinner.  This was his escape and when he was participating in this passion, he was in a world that was far away from the pressures of his job.  He had learned that you can retire at any age in a sense.

With an all-consuming hobby or interest,
you can retire at any age.

For anyone who is approaching retirement or for anyone who is already retired, I would ask that you take a moment and do a little self-assessment.  You’ve probably spent some time analyzing your finances and perhaps planning where you’re going to live and what your daily spending needs are.  You may have even planned some vacations or little road trips.  That’s all very good and I commend you for that work.  But have you thought about how you’re going to spend your time?  Most of us spend quite a bit of time at a job and, when you add in the commuting time or in the work you might bring home with you, you’re talking about a significant block of time.  While most people can’t wait to retire, many of them face their now empty calendar without a clue about how to fill in that forty, fifty, sixty or seventy hours a week that was spent going to work, coming home from work and the endless hours of meetings, conference calls and presentations.  Having nothing to do can be a little overwhelming.  The people who had developed hobbies or outside interests have a distinct advantage.  They already found out that you can retire at any age and have developed a mindset to fill their free time with the passions they have created with a hobby or other activity.  But, if you haven’t done that, please look around this website for ideas and activities that you might find attractive during this wonderful period of your life.  We have enjoyed traveling immensely.  It is definitely a passion of mine to see as much of this world as we possibly can and we have met many people who feel the same way.  We have even met some who write about their exploits and make a little bit of money to defray the costs of this expensive hobby.

The Cruise Experience Can Be Life Changing
