Although it comes under criticism from time to time, I am a big proponent of the internet. In fact, I think retirement and the internet were made for each other. Sure, there are abuses of this channel of communication and we should never condone some of the things that are enabled by this miracle of the technological age, but I always try to focus on the positive. The opportunities provided by the internet are like nothing else that has been developed in the past two hundred years. One might argue for the telephone, the automobile or space travel but, in my opinion, the internet has impacted more people more profoundly than any other technological advancement in the past two centuries. Most people, and an even greater proportion of retirees, have yet to master the internet to its fullest.
Retirement and the internet were made for each other. Although I hated going to school, I loved to learn. I read books all the time. The internet is almost like having every library and archive ever created right in front of you. We always think of children as being the ones who ask questions, but I think, as we grow older, we should be asking more questions than when we were younger. The world we live in is absolutely incredible and it is only a small part of the entire universe. The times we live in are extraordinary, but it is only a small portion of the time our universe has been in existence. The amazing thing is that we can explore those places and those times by searching the internet for answers to any questions we might have. There are virtual tours of just about any important place you can imagine and, for those unable to travel to see these sites in person, the internet is a great substitute for the real thing. You can even take a course on just about any subject you can imagine.
Retirement and the internet form a great partnership. For those who are reading this and have no interest in any of those things or are asking what difference it makes, I would suggest that you’re not really giving this enough thought. Because even if you have no curiosity about this world and even if you have no desire to explore the universe beyond, the fact is that the internet has changed the world of commerce in ways that have made it possible for people to run a business right from their home. On just the personal level it has allowed us to do banking and pay bills without leaving the breakfast table but from an entrepreneurial perspective, it has put the opportunity of a worldwide marketplace right on our doorstep. Again, you may ask what difference does it make?
Retirement and the internet have created a new world for those who want to take advantage of a perfect storm of opportunities. Think of the experience that anyone who reached retirement age has behind them. They have a wealth of knowledge and usually an inner dream that may have gone unfulfilled during their working career. Look around at the top CEO’s and you’ll see experienced managers who can make decisions. Look at anyone in Corporate America and you'll see a lot of managers who think they can make better decisions than the ones being made by the people in charge of their company right now. The internet gives them the chance to find out. It helps level the playing field for start up businesses because one idea can generate a fortune. I believe every retiree has an idea that could be turned into a profit and the internet is the perfect platform for that. Retirement and the internet were made for each other.
Just one idea marketed online can lead you on an adventure of a lifetime. Even if you were very accomplished in your career, a successful business of your own will give you more satisfaction than you ever imagined. And there are thousands of possibilities. If it is something you’re passionate about like a hobby or an interest, you won’t believe how quickly the time passes or you become so energized when you take an idea from a concept to a thriving business. Your own website can be the starting point, and it can be as big as you want it to be. Affiliate marketing is the technological equivalent of a recommendation. We’ve all done it. We have recommended a restaurant, hotel, movie or a home repair person to someone else. When you do it on the internet you can get paid for it and when you link it to a hobby or interest, you can have a lot of fun doing it. You can even market your own product and have others help promote it. You can write a book and be marketed all over the world. There has never been a time of such great opportunities. People think back to the time our country ended at the Mississippi River and how great an opportunity it would have been to buy up property in the west and they’re absolutely correct to think that. I would suggest that this is a time of opportunity as well. Your chance of creating an attractive income didn’t end just because you retired. Retirement is your second chance. Retirement and the internet were made for each other. It’s time to explore it and find out. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
