Retirement is a time for discovery. We spent decades working to get to this point. We missed family gatherings, probably canceled a vacation or two and dreaded Sunday night because of what was waiting for us on Monday morning. It’s time to discover how life should be lived. It’s time to discover how wonderful our morning coffee can taste when we don’t have a meeting to go to or a problem to solve. Retirement is a time to take back our lives, live each day to the fullest and do things that you never had the time to do when you were working.
Retirement is a time to see the world. There is nothing better than experiencing a completely different way of living and learning about a perspective that may be very different from yours. We were amazed to walk through the frigid streets of Norway where they embrace the cold and enjoy the outdoors even when the tourists are shivering and finding refuge in their gift shops. Watching Madrid become a ghost town in the afternoon when everyone took their siesta is still something we remember with a smile. Families strolling after dinner filled all the streets and plazas and we realized how much more relaxed they were in this magnificent city. Retirement is a time for discovery and a time to learn.
How do you look up at the stars at night and not have hundreds of questions? From learning about the constellations and the planets to the ancient navigators who used the night sky as their GPS, there’s a lifetime of learning that awaits you and countless hours of contemplating how big our universe is. Retirement is a time for discovery of all the things that you had an interest in but weren’t covered in school in an easy to learn fashion. Some of the documentaries and NASA films that have been made about the vastness of our universe are far more interesting than any teacher could ever make it. Take the time to visit a planetarium and watch these presentations on a magnificent dome and you will start to see the wonders of the world we live in. Attend a space launch at Cape Kennedy in Florida and you’ll realize the spirit of exploration that has driven humans since the beginning of time. Retirement is a time for discovery about so many different things that you’ll realize the list can be endless and your only hope is to prioritize those things that you want to experience the most.
Retirement is the time to experience the magic of a Broadway musical, the skills of a top-notch magician, the incredible abilities of athletes in person at a baseball game, football game or on the tennis courts. Splurge and get good seats at an event and marvel at the sound of a fastball hitting the catcher’s mitt or the grunts from the tennis stars as they serve a ball so fast it’s nothing but a blur. Even if you’re not a musical lover, attend a concert with a full orchestra and you may find yourself transported by the beauty of the music and the performance that is the product of a lifetime of study and practice. Mastering a sport or a musical instrument is the work of a lifetime and retirement is a time for discovery and appreciation of the arts. Don’t be surprised if you discover an inner desire to improve your skills in a particular area because it can be one of the most enjoyable things you will ever do. Learning how to play an instrument can be rewarding, challenging and provide hours of true happiness.
Take the time to appreciate nature and you may never be the same person. Go on a whale watch or attend feeding time at the zoo. Go deep sea fishing or practice fly fishing in a stream. Hike through a forest, climb a mountain or explore a cave and you’ll see how amazing nature can be. Seeing a moose, a bear or an eagle out in the wild is an experience that is hard to describe and one that you’ll remember forever. Retirement is a time for discovery of the simple things in life and there is nothing more beautiful than nature itself. Experience the wonders of Yosemite, the expansive Grand Canyon or the power of Niagara Falls, and you’ll begin to appreciate the beauty of the world we live in. Marvel at the sequoia trees in California, the cactus in Arizona or the palm trees in Florida and you’ll see the diversity that nature offers for us to enjoy. Retirement is the time to see the world.
Discover the great thinkers of the world and you don’t even have to leave your chair. Retirement is a time for discovery about how your mind works and how things can totally change when you change your thoughts. From Socrates and Plato in ancient times to the philosophers of today, we’re still learning about the wonders of our minds. Take the time to read Thoreau, Voltaire or even Napoleon Hill and you will realize the impact of having a different perspective and how it can change your life. Get excited about what life can be and become determined to enjoy the gift of retirement to the fullest. Go out and see the world! It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
