Even if you’ve been retired ten or more years, I would like to suggest that you open your mind to the possibility that your retirement journey is beginning again – right now. Today is a new day and what’s happened in the past does not have to dictate what is going to happen in the future. I meet too many people who seem bored and, in a rut, and I would like to say you can change that with a simple change in your outlook. You worked all your life to get here so make the most of it and enjoy every minute of it. All of those things that you thought about doing when you were young can be things you could be doing now. It’s amazing how many people lose their appreciation of how wonderful life can be. The world full of new things to learn and new topics to explore.
This website was created to be an inspiration for everyone’s retirement journey. Children have a way of being in the moment and enjoying the simple things in life. Did you ever watch children on a beach? They chase after birds, dodge the waves and, inevitably, dig for something until they get tired. They seem fascinated by the simplest of things. Somewhere along the line we lost that gift of appreciation as if we’d seen it all. The world is too big and complex to not be impressed by something new every day. We sometimes take things for granted and don’t appreciate the simplest things in life. We spend more time looking at our phones than we do looking at the magic of a sunset.
During my working years I was too busy to enjoy certain things like a sunset or the blossoming of spring or a fresh snowfall. I ignored the sunset because I didn’t get everything I wanted to get done completed, didn’t even notice the spring flowers and looked at snow as something I had to shovel before I went to work. I have become determined to make my retirement journey as meaningful and pleasant as I possibly can. I can tell you that is making a real difference in my outlook and I’ve learned to appreciate even the simplest things like watching a bee move from flower to flower or the way that birds seem to fly in formation. If you’ve ever seen a flock of tiny birds change direction in unison and think about what you just witnessed, you realize that nature is absolutely amazing. Retirement is a time in life where you can appreciate the small miracles every day and do a little research if you want to learn more.
Now, some of you are saying that you should live life like that every day, and I couldn’t agree more. But the truth is that I didn’t. I thought I was too busy. I was wrong to not take the time back when I was working, but I can use retirement to change that. I admit it wasn’t easy. It forced me to look at life differently. But the thing that I realized is that life is about changing. Life is about trying to improve ourselves every day. Or growth shouldn’t stop in retirement. It should be an incentive to try new things and see new places. Our retirement journey can be exhilarating, or it can be mundane. I choose to try to make every day a challenge to learn something new or do something that I look forward to doing. I feel very strongly that retirement is a gift. More importantly it’s an opportunity. The sad fact is that every one of us knows somebody who died too young to enjoy this wonderful reward we call retirement. We owe it to them to make the most of our retirement journey.
While it’s true that retirement means you got older, it doesn’t mean you have to act old. It doesn’t mean you can’t live a dream that you had as a child. Did you want to be the starting centerfielder for the Boston Red Sox? Go join a senior’s league and you’ll see people who had that same dream having the time of their life. Did you want to learn how to fly? Go get a drone and learn how to fly it. With the cameras that they have on those things you can get almost the same experience. Did you want to go to some foreign city or historic site? Do a search on virtual reality and see what’s available. We need to bring some excitement to our retirement journey. Stop looking for reasons you can’t do something and look for ways to make it happen. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
