Retirement never gets old. It just doesn’t. No morning commute on the very poorly named Long Island Expressway, no staff meetings or conference calls, no new projects to plan for and having an uninterrupted lunch and dinner are things that I continue to appreciate more than I ever thought possible. Everything seems better in retirement – even vacations.
There are some people who think retirement is one big vacation, and I don’t disagree with them but the trips in retirement are not limited to two weeks and do not have that cloud that existed before of having to return to work. There were very few vacations where I did not have to check in with somebody or attend a conference call and there were even times when I had to cancel a vacation altogether. Nothing like that happens in retirement because we have all the time in the world. The last few cruises we did extensions at the end and made the most of time in the last port. We’re no longer boxed in by the school calendar and the freedom from the summer crowds has been one of the things we are most grateful for. Retirement never gets old.

From our morning coffee to our relaxed dinner at night, we have made it a point to appreciate everything about our new existence. With no long commute to get to work, we’ve even begun to appreciate the snow and the way it can transform the landscape is truly amazing. Late night games or movies don’t mean a loss of sleep and the silence of the alarm clock is something we still appreciate. Retirement doesn’t get old. Taking our time working on a recipe for dinner is a new activity that we have come to enjoy very much. While my wife has a calendar full of card games, mahjong and book clubs, I have finally found the time to catch up on all the reading I couldn’t get to while I was working. It was worth the wait. Retirement never gets old. A lot of my friends from work feel the same way and have started new hobbies and activities that they absolutely love from spelunking to becoming a certified sommelier, their new pastimes have given them a new lease on life. It’s amazing what happens when you develop a new interest and can’t wait to learn more about it. And any lover of sports has got to feel like they’ve died and gone to heaven with all the games that you watch in person rather than taping them for a later date. Even if you’re careful enough not to find out who actually won the game, it just isn’t the same. For that reason alone, retirement is a game changer and it’s a gift I hope everyone gets to enjoy in their life.

Retirement never gets old. There are so many things to appreciate about this stage of your life that, if you find yourself bored, my suggestion would be to make a lifestyle change because no one should be bored when there are some many places to go, so many things to do and so many new things to do. If you don’t have a hobby, get one! Take The Self Discovery Challenge for Retirement and review all the things you did in life. It’s an important thing to do because it may give you a clue for what to do next. Take your time going through the process and take it seriously. I've talked to quite a few people who had forgotten many things from their youth, and they were quite surprised how they felt once they recalled some of their memories from their past. It may trigger a desire to re-connect with old friends, re-visit a place from your past or re-kindle an interest that, for some reason, you let slip away. It's your chance to re-visit this area of your life. If money is a problem in making this happen, don’t eliminate the possibility of creating more income in your life. Downsizing or selling your “stuff” can give you more money than you might imagine and more seniors than ever are starting their own business. The only limit to what you can do are the ones you create yourself. It’s never too late for a new start in life. Your existence should not be in front of a television set watching mindless shows that do nothing to challenge your mind and invigorate your spirit. You were meant for more than that but you’re the only one who can make it happen. Why not make it a point to start today. Begin a new hobby or start a little business. Take a trip or cook a new recipe. Visit old friends or make new ones. You only get one shot at this so you better start today because it’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
