It may be because I realize that I have gotten to an age I never thought I would get to. Or it may be because, it seems just recently, there have been a string of deaths around us that took us by surprise. But the question I am thinking about more often is: what happens after we die? Now, I know that may seem a bit contrary to the philosophy of this website which is to enjoy retired life every day but it’s right in line with my other belief which is to have an endless curiosity about everything around us. And let’s be real for a moment, we’re all going to die. When it happens, what will it be like?
Can you do any research on this subject? Is there anything that can be learned? Well, there’s more information out there than you ever imagined. As expected, there is a lot of information provided from the religious aspect because many religions provide a perspective on what happens after we die. That includes the opinions of some atheists who maintain that everything stops. When you die, you’re gone. It’s as simple as that. But there’s also a field called NDE or Near-Death Experience. I’ve been exploring this for some time because, as you might expect, once I came across this information, it was a rabbit hole that, in some ways, I’ve never come out of. I’ve always been a planner as you might have learned from following this website so it’s only natural that I have given some thought to what happens next (if anything). I went to a medical expert (my doctor) and found out that he believes that there is nothing after we die. All the NDE stories are hallucinatory. I asked him about the ones that cannot be explained such as the things people saw that just could not be explained any other way than to accept the fact that they had an out-of-body experience and saw things they couldn’t possibly have known about. He did not have an answer and, surprisingly, this man of science and research, had no desire to explore it further. Needless to say, I did. I wanted to explore what happens after we die.

I have written many articles on all the wonderful things you can explore when you are given the gift of time which is the greatest thing retirement has to offer. I have explored many destinations and events, many subjects and skills and remain fascinated by certain topics and time periods. I love American history and can’t learn enough about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. The courage shown by the leaders and soldiers and citizens who braved the events of the Second World War are constant inspirations to me. Wonderful writing and music can hold my interest for days at a time and I never get tired of seeing new places and enjoying new dining experiences. All of these things provide me with tremendous enjoyment and are, in fact, what inspired this website after hearing about people who found retirement to be boring. All of these things are on my list of activities that I look forward to every single day. Well, guess what? You can add Near-Death Experiences to that list because it is a fascinating topic and can give us a glimpse into the majesty of our universe and our Creator. Many of the stories come from people who had no faith or even given a thought to whether an afterlife awaited them and the more you listen to the more questions come to mind. That’s all I need to keep me occupied. I love a good mystery, and this might be the greatest of them all: what happens after we die?

I know some readers might click away from this page and never come back after reading this but please understand that I am not trying to “convert” anyone to any point of view with this article. What I will say is that this is a fascinating subject and the research that has been done in this field is mind boggling. Although some people might think the thought of death is morbid, there is only a sense of pure joy in many of the experiences that you come across. All you have to do is a search on NDE and a whole world will open up for you to explore. Just three letters: NDE. You can start down your own path to explore the question: what happens when we die.
Obviously, the people who have stories to tell about this came back to continue to live their life. But they came back after learning something that would make a difference in the way they approached life. They learned how much kindness matters and that how any of our actions can have a ripple effect on the people we meet. If nothing else is learned I think those are words to live by. We can bring joy or pain to each of our interactions with a fellow human being. It’s our choice. We can make the most of every day or sit and complain about the world. Again, it’s our choice. I will continue to explore this subject of the afterlife along with the many other subjects of interest that I have. If anything, it reinforces the outlook on life that I already have and that is to make every day count. We live in an incredible world that is waiting for us to explore it. We have a legacy of great thinkers and philosophers who we can learn from. There’s never a shortage of things to do. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
