Every once in a while, someone tells me that retirement isn’t what they thought it would be. I fully admit to not identifying with that sentiment at all, but I understand there are people who feel that way and it’s the main reason I started this website. It is very sad to me that someone worked so hard for so long to get to a point in life when the whole world is at their disposal and they wake up one morning and find out that they’re bored. Here’s what you should do when retirement is boring and if you make a conscious effort to do it as well as you can, you can eliminate that feeling of being bored whenever you want. The secret to eliminating boredom from your life depends on three things.

The first and most important factor is to find out what you’ve been doing and where you are heading. What you should do when retirement is boring depends a great deal on what you’ve been doing that has failed to keep your interest or keep you motivated to move forward with your activities in such a way that boredom doesn’t enter your mind. Remember back to your working years and recall those times when your job was most appealing and reflect on why that was the case. Quite often, it was because you had a goal or a purpose that you were working to achieve. That’s a need that doesn’t go away. If we’re going to become engaged in something whether it’s a book, a movie, a job or, in this case, our retirement, you need to have an overall purpose and a goal that represents a challenge and requires a commitment on your part to get there. Even further, when you get there, you should feel good about the accomplishment. It should be something you really want to do. This is the first and most important step in chasing boredom out of your existence.
What you should do when retirement is boring is to treat it like a job, but that job should be something you really want to do. You spent your whole life being told what to do during your years of employment, now it’s your turn to take charge and direct your activities in retirement because the next two steps depend on choosing your pastime, interest or hobby carefully and then find a way to learn as much as you can to increase your skill level to achieve the goals that you have set for yourself. If you don’t have a hobby or interest that you take seriously, perhaps you need one. I think everyone has a hidden creative spirit and, if you don’t believe that, I would suggest you take The Self Discovery Challenge for Retirement. It’s a process I created to help people examine their past to see if there is still something you wanted to achieve in life that has been left undone. Quite often, there's something we have put into the recesses of our memory bank and let the "dust" of the years fade that memory. People rediscover hidden desires all the time and some people go out and learn to play music, start writing a novel or even painting a landscape. Hobbies can do a lot to stimulate our creative process and identify a hidden desire and developing a skill or learning new things can develop a discipline that can be applied to other areas of your life. While setting goals and developing your learning or skill level are important second and third steps for chasing boredom away, the first step in finding a purpose in life is the most important and taking this little "Challenge" is designed to help you do that. If you can’t find a hobby or interest important enough to give your life focus, there is one other thing to consider that almost never fails in creating an existence that is challenging, engaging and extremely rewarding.

Volunteering can be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever do. Finding an organization that appeals to you whether it’s a hospital, church or historical site can be one of the smartest things you will ever do. Your work will be appreciated, and you’ll know that you’re making a difference. Look around for an organization that’s a good fit for your interests. Chances are you’ll know it when you see it and know that getting involved is exactly what you should do when retirement is boring. When you work for something larger than yourself, you begin to appreciate what a wonderful life you have. I happen to think that anyone who has reached retirement age in this wonderful country we live in has basically won the lotter of life. There’s so much to learn and do and so many places to visit, you’ll wonder how you could ever have let boredom slip into your life. Go out and find a new hobby or interest and learn all that you can. Become an expert in some subject and write a book. Win that golf tournament in your community or start a band. The only limit to what you can do are thoughts that are in your head. Go out and get started. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
