This website got started because a fellow retiree complained to me that retirement is boring and they were considering getting a part-time job. I felt unbelievably sorry for this guy because I happen to think that retirement is the best thing ever invented. I cannot believe anyone could be bored but, then again, there may not be anyone who looked forward to retirement more than me. I spent hours thinking about all the things I could do when I no longer had to work. That’s why retirement planning is important. Most people think carefully about the financial side of life and whether or not they will have enough money to do what they want but very few people think about how they are going to spend their time. They plan for when the paycheck stops but they fail to plan when their appointment calendar is a blank page waiting to be filled in. There won’t be any supervisor telling you how to spend your day or what projects needed attention. You’re completely on your own and many seniors are unprepared for that moment. I created this website to help retirees through the process of finding their “retirement mission” and to revitalize their life. I may have stopped working for a living, but I always had a purpose for how I would spend my time. I believe having a purpose is important in everything in life. It gives you direction and inspires learning and that’s a great way to keep that horrible word (boredom) out of your vocabulary.
Maintaining a purpose in life and still creating goals for your retirement is why retirement planning is important. Don’t just take up golf. Set a goal for improving your game and take lessons if necessary to achieve your objective. It gives you something to work toward and gives you a great sense of accomplishment. Take this approach for everything you set out to do. Don’t just travel to location to cross it off your bucket list, take the time to learn about your destination ahead of time and set a goal to learn more about the history, the people, the culture and, if you’re like me, especially the food. Ever since our first trip to Italy, we make it a practice to hire a professional guide to help us discover the details of a location that sometimes eludes the casual visitor. It’s not as expensive as you might think and the wealth of knowledge that you get will add to your memories more than you can imagine. You’ll develop a “soft spot” for the location and the people. Your ears will perk up every time you hear something about that location, and it always seems that you become more aware of something that you’re familiar with. As vast as this world is, taking the time to learn about each location you travel to can make it seem just a little bit smaller.

I have had a passion for history ever since I can remember. I’m not sure why, but I have had a fascination for learning about great events and the people who were at the center of them. I can go almost anywhere and become focused on the history and the famous people who came from whatever city or town that I’m in. I realize that is not true for most people, but I do believe that everyone has their own personal topic that they just can’t seem to get enough of. I also know a lot of people who swear that they have no interests at all. I would suggest they’re not thinking hard enough, or they don’t want to admit to a personal obsession. I think those interests make us who we are and that the things we’re interested in make us as unique as our DNA. It’s almost like our personality profile and learning about “what makes us tick” is why retirement planning is important. It will give us a blueprint about how to spend our time. There’s a value to knowing ourselves as well as we can before embarking on this last phase of our life because this is our last shot at getting it right. I don’t mean to be an alarmist, but if you had an inner desire to play an instrument, write a book, take up photography or learn to cook a gourmet meal, retirement was made to accomplish that task. It is a time to find your own secret to personal fulfillment. Do you know how many retirees volunteer at a local hospital, church or historical site and find it to be the best part of their day? Did you ever think of looking at this time of your life as being the best and most exciting part? Do you have any hidden dreams that you’ve given up on too soon? I created something I call the Self Discovery Challenge for Retirement to help people do an examination for their life in search of memories that they would like to come alive again. Most people find it to be a lot of fun, and some have even started new hobbies because of what they uncovered during the process.

I think it’s one of the main reasons why retirement planning is important. When it comes to finances, you can make adjustments to make up for any income shortfalls through a job or even a small business but, when it comes to looking forward to each day with activities that you can’t wait to get to, most people don’t give enough thought to what is going to give them the happiness they deserve in living out their golden years. Explore this topic as fully as you can and check out all the potential hobbies and travel destinations that you can. Take the time to discover what your “Retirement DNA” is all about and set your life in that direction. Make every day count because it’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
