One of the things I noticed as I was getting older was that too many people pay too much attention to what other people are doing. Even worse, they ignore the people around them as they look at their devices to catch up on what their friends might be doing or even what might be going on in the world. On the surface, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it seems to be happening much too frequently. In a world where people can literally write their own story, people seem to be content to read the stories of others or listen to what other people are saying about them. The fact of the matter is that your life is what you make it and there seems to be a shortage of people who go their own way and lead their life in a way that makes it clear they really don’t care what other people think. You can write your own story, and you don't have to care if no one else likes it. After all, it's YOUR story!
It takes a lot of nerve, I admit that. But I admire people who go their own way. I applaud people who try new things and look for ways to express themselves creatively. I think those people have found a passion and a happiness that too many people are too afraid to attempt. You can write your own story. Everyone can. It takes some courage to dare to be different, but I don’t know too many people who regret doing so. It’s the easiest thing in the world to be a critic. I try to temper my words when I set out to suggest a different way to do something, especially if I have experience doing that same task. Yes, criticism can be very constructive, but it should never destroy the spirit of a person. People are too quick to use the power of the critic rather than the influence of being a mentor who provides guidance in a way that is constructive and helpful. I can just hear all of the athletes saying that their best mentor was their coach who used to scream at them all the time like a miniature Vince Lomabardi who was the greatest taskmaster of them all. That type of coach is fine for you, but it doesn’t work for me. And I think that’s true for a lot of people. If you really want to write your own story and explore new things and defy the experts, someone has to encourage you. The world if filled with more than enough people telling you how hard it is to be successful. Somewhere along the line you need to hear that it is possible to make a dream come true.
I believe everyone has an inner desire or a secret ambition that stays hidden for their entire life. I am saddened by how many people just don’t seem to appreciate retirement. They just don’t seem to understand that this is the time in their life where they can try almost anything they ever wanted. While they won’t be able to become the starting Center for the Chicago Bulls, they can play senior basketball and still have a great time. While the physical aspects of their life may not be what they once were, their creative skills can still be developed. You can still write your own story about how your life will turn out. That may be literally writing about or just designing it and following that path. Many seniors take up writing whether it’s a personal journal or travel articles, a book or a short story or a novel or a website. There are retirees who have found a new life, and they can be a great inspiration if you think there’s still something left for you to do. You don’t need a coach yelling in your ear to work harder but I think you’ll find it encouraging to read about other people our age who are living their dream. You can write your own story if you take the time to figure out what it is that you want to do.
And sometimes it can be nothing more than a desire to help others. That is a wonderful pursuit. Volunteering has turned many people’s lives around. You not only write your own story, but you help others write theirs. There are so many organizations who could use the talents that you have. Children especially need a gentle voice of encouragement in this day and age. We don’t need more critics. We need more mentors. We are all fellow travelers on this journey we call life and there are a lot of distractions that can lead people astray if they pay more attention to the lives of others than they do to their own. It’s a noble undertaking to help others along the way. It’s time to write your own story and help others write theirs. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
