Life can be full of surprises.  It can be very unpredictable so, keep in mind that your retirement can change as well.  That’s perfectly okay.  Sometimes the reasons are very positive like the birth of a grandchild or even an unexpected job offer or travel opportunity.  The most important thing is to be as flexible as you can be and to develop a plan that will allow you to adjust as well as possible.

For many retirees, changes in health conditions can be a frightening proposition.  A serious diagnosis can cause anyone to become anxious.  The best thing to do, however, is to stay as calm as possible and do as much research as you can.  The internet is an amazing resource if you use it properly and there are organizations that stay up to date on the latest medical research.  You should work closely with your physician, but I have found that staying up to date on a medical condition makes you a more informed patient and will allow you to ask questions that are important to you.  Most doctors will always if you if you have any questions, so they are expecting you to become a full participant in your treatment.  That greatly increases the odds in your favor.

Financial difficulties might also present a situation that causes you to re-think your options.  Your retirement can change at any time and it’s always good to have some fallback options in your financial toolbox.  A friend of mine found out firsthand what can happen when a source of income you were depending on dries up.  He had prepared for this possibility with a little website business that he had started as his working days were coming to an end.  The great part about all of this was that he really enjoyed what he was doing and knew that he had developed a steady income that was actually a little bit more than the income he lost when his investment and the money he was receiving from it suddenly disappeared.  His website provided a very nice financial cushion.

Websites are a very attractive business that everyone should consider.  The best part is that they can be started with a relatively small investment and there is almost no limit to the income you can generate.  And you don’t have to be a technical wizard.  There is one company that has created such a user-friendly environment that I believe anyone can be successful if they follow their step-by-step instructions.  I started this website as a hobby because I like to write, take photographs and relive the great travel experiences that we’ve had in our retirement years.  The money-making possibilities were a bonus.  I would do this whether or not it generated any income.  I had no intention of doing this when my working career came to an end, but I also was open to exploring my options.  Your retirement can change at any time and, when someone told me they found retirement boring, I got the idea to write a book about planning your retirement and how to maximize your enjoyment of this wonderful time of your life.  There are many books about financial planning for your retirement years but not too many about how to spend your time and keep life as interesting as possible.  I sat down and started to write but I realized it would take quite a while to see a finished product and then it would have to be marketed for publication.  That’s when the idea of a website occurred to me.

As I searched the internet, I found out that there was no shortage of information about the financial planning that goes into providing a secure income for your retirement years, but not too much about how to have a good time when you reach this wonderful milestone.  When I looked at the book I had started, I realized that the world we live in is changing rapidly and even as I was writing, some of the things that I had written needed to be changed.  I did not want to put out a book that would be obsolete before it hit the bookstores.  A website was the answer, and I have enjoyed this process more than I enjoyed the job I worked at for forty years.  I realized that your retirement can change in an instant and many times it will be for the better.

I think anyone who is approaching retirement should give some thought to starting a little business that will not take a lot of capital or require you to be in a specific location (like a store) but can still provide a little extra money now and then.  I think the internet provides the best opportunity for retirees (or almost anyone) to leverage technology and take advantage of the global marketplace that a website presence can provide.  The results can be very impressive and, if you link to a hobby or passion that you have, it’s a marriage made in heaven.  You should at least explore the possibilities.  You might join the other thousands of retirees who have come to the same conclusion: your retirement can change at any time so why not be prepared?  You’ll be starting a journey that can be as satisfying as anything you’ve ever done.  Why not give it a try?  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
