Discover New Things In Retirement

I never like to hear anyone say that they’re bored in retirement.  This part of your life should be the most interesting and enjoyable time and packed with endless pleasure.  Discover new things in retirement and you can make every day a vacation or a wonderful learning experience.  If you think about the times in your life where time just seemed to whiz by, it was probably on one of your most enjoyable vacations or when you were learning something new and being challenged with a task you thoroughly enjoyed.  That’s what retirement can be every day if you make the effort to develop a plan.

I happen to think that the best vacations are the ones that are carefully planned.  By that I don’t mean an itinerary that is filled with morning till night with tours and activities but planned with the most enjoyment in mind.  You take the time to know what is going to give you the greatest amount of pleasure and plan accordingly.  If you love the beach, you don’t schedule your vacation in a city, right?  You make it a point to research the best beaches, especially the ones that are the least crowded and close to some great restaurants.  That’s what retirement allows you to do, and not enough people take advantage of it.  We now have the time to do research and explore the possibilities.  Our calendar is more flexible than ever because we don’t have to worry about work or the school calendar.  We can go to the nicest beaches when they are the least crowded and show up at restaurants for the best Happy Hour deals.  Retirement is worth the wait just for that.  Take the time to discover new things in retirement and use the gift of flexibility to visit places you’ve never been and try doing things you never did before.

St. Peter's Square

We hear horror stories from tourists who went to Rome and Greece in the summer when the crowds and the heat are at their worst.  They were held hostage to the school calendar and couldn’t go in the Fall or Spring when the crowds are so much less.  Retirement gives you the freedom to explore new places at the best time.  Discover new things in retirement and you’ll become convinced that this is the way you were meant to live your life.

You can discover new things in retirement through travel, hobbies or reading.

This doesn’t just apply to traveling, of course.  Was there a secret ambition that you always wanted to try?  Did you struggle to find the time to learn to play golf well or try a new sport like pickle ball or scuba diving?  Did you ever want to learn to play an instrument or join a band?  Retirees are doing new things all the time.  They are finally free from the treadmill of work and can now discover new things in retirement.  Believe it or not, some people actually start a second career.  I know an Army pilot who retired from the service with a full pension and became a neurosurgeon in his second career.  He would sometimes fly a helicopter to a hospital to do an emergency surgery and loved every minute of his new career.  You have to admire someone like that.  I would never want to extend my working career but, on the other hand, I never found a job that I was excited about doing.  Not only did he discover new things in retirement but he built a second career that was even more successful than his first.

There are many retirees who discover new things in retirement and become so passionate they work almost full time at their new hobby or activity.  That’s when the days whiz by and you have so much fun you almost hate to go to bed every night.  I think that potential exists for everyone.  I think everyone has a hidden desire that they need to explore.  It can be music, writing, painting, drawing or becoming the best pool player on the planet.  I discovered how much I enjoy writing when I started this website.  It’s fun, relaxing and an unexpected surprise.  If I had been afraid to discover new things in retirement, I might not have ever stumbled onto this activity.  The best part is that it covers some of my other interests like photography and travel.  What I discovered in this process was how many other retirees are starting their own websites as well on topics and interests that they have developed a passion for.  Quite a few of them are making some very good money doing something they truly enjoy.  Why couldn’t that be you?

Cooking Class

Why not explore the possibilities?  Why not try different hobbies and activities and travel to places you’ve never been before?  Try writing about it or keeping a journal through photographs.  Explore the different wines and foods of this wonderful world and try to create a wonderful dinner at home.  If you can’t cook, take a cooking class and open up a whole new world.  They’re a lot of fun and you come away with some great recipes.  Discover new things in retirement and every day will become an adventure.  Life is too short to be a spectator.  Go out and see the world.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
