Find Your Happy Spot In Retirement

Your retirement years should be as happy as you can make them.  You worked all your life to get here, so make it a point to do the things you love with the people you care about the most in the places that make you smile.  Find your happy spot by taking a few minutes and recalling those times in your life you wish you could go back to.  While you can’t completely capture the past, you can use it for a foundation and create more memories by doing the things you love to do.

Don’t let the demon of “old age” into your life.  Fight it off by celebrating life to the fullest.  I am very aware that this will not be easy for everyone.  The years are not always kind in some ways.  People experience health problems or the loss of loved ones.  As difficult as it might be, even in those cases we should try to make the best of life.  Taking just a few minutes to recall all those wonderful times you’d like to repeat again might get you to be more determined to find your happy spot in life and find ways to make it last just a little bit longer.  Memories, especially of people you truly cared about, can be the best part of our day.  Keeping a retirement journal is a great way to keep those memories alive. While it is sad to have lost somebody close, the happiness those people gave us should be treasured.  I often think of my parents and how much they gave of themselves to provide for their three sons.  My father never made a lot of money, but we never felt like we were deprived of anything.  Our best memories were when he would play games with us like Monopoly or watch some movie like The Day The Earth Stood Still while our mother was making Sunday dinner.  Both of them would enjoy seeing their children enjoying their retired years.  If we take the time to appreciate everything that we’ve been given in our life, it can change your whole outlook.

Find your happy spot in retirement by recalling some of the great memories of your life.

Our retirement means we’re no longer tied to a job.  My wife was a teacher, so we were always tied to the school calendar and traveled to vacation spots at their busiest time.  Now we’re able to go at any time and some of those over-crowded tourist spots become quite charming when summer is over.  Cape Cod in the fall takes on a whole new charm on a mid-September weekday.  The crowds that seem to overrun the European capitals like Rome, Paris and London are significantly reduced in the fall.  When it was impossible to get seated at a busy café in the summer, you’ll usually have no problem when the crowds have disappeared.  It seems you can find you happy spot much more easily when the pace is more relaxed and the people have the time to enjoy a quiet afternoon.  That has been the most pleasing part of retirement for me.  The ability to do things during off-hours in a more relaxed fashion.  You don’t have to join the dinner crowd at six o’clock when everyone has finished work.  You can go to a little restaurant and enjoy a Happy Hour special and sometimes have the place to yourself.  Breakfast at a top bakery is much less crowded on a weekday and much more enjoyable.  Retirement gives you the time to savor an experience rather than rushing through it.

Journal

The freedom from having to work for a living gives us the time to do the things we had always dreamed of but were too busy making a living to do.  A friend of ours has taken up painting and has enjoyed it more than she ever thought possible.  She had an inner desire and a strong feeling that she had some talent, and she looks forward to her new hobby every day.  You can find your happy spot by trying something similar.  It might not be painting but what about photography or woodworking or even writing?  I found out I like to write far more than I imagined.  This website is extremely fulfilling and it's surprising how many retirees have started their own website.  Technology has given everyone the capability of running a business from their home that can have a global audience. It’s a great hobby and you might even create an income for yourself.  But I don’t do this for the money.  I like to write about a lot of different things.  This allows me to enjoy our travel and dining experiences a little bit more because I’m always looking for something interesting to write about.  You might be surprised at how much fun it can be.  If you have a hobby or an interest, take a few minutes to look online to see if there’s anyone else out there that has that same passion.  You might get inspired.  You might find your happy spot by starting a little business online.

Retirement is a time to take life a little bit easy and enjoy it as much as we can.  There’s no one telling you what you have to get accomplished today and there are no meetings, presentations or conference calls that you can’t put off for another day.  All the things you dreamed of doing can be done whenever you want.  That’s a pretty amazing thing when you think about it.  Why don’t you pour your favorite beverage, find you happy spot and think about that for a while.  This is a wonderful time that many people never get to experience.  We owe it to them to Enjoy Retired Life!
