Have you been fired from retirement? While that may sound like a strange question, it does appear that there has been an uptick in the number of people leaving behind their “retired” status and finding their way back into the ranks of the employed. Although I can understand the need, I do find it a little bit sad that people had to interrupt their golden years to crawl back into the battle of the workplace. If you’ve spent any time reading the articles posted on this website, you know two things about me. First, I absolutely love being retired. Second, I hated work. I disliked almost everything about my job and career except for the paycheck. It’s not that I’m lazy because I wouldn’t be doing this website if I was. It’s just that my job had no attraction for me. I was doing what other people told me to do, and, with this little business, I can do exactly what I want whenever I want to do it. That might sound like I’m a bit obstinate and I would plead guilty to that charge.

I completely understand the realities of life. Finances change all the time. Prices have not been going down so, if your income is not keeping pace, I can understand how you might need to make a change in some way. You might look at your checkbook, see the mounting shortfall and find out that you have been fired from retirement because, if you don’t make some kind of change, you’re going to end up in serious debt. There are things that you can do. Creating a budget and cutting costs are the two top candidates and, for many retirees, a job looks like a smart step to take to correct the monthly shortfall in your checking account. Some people even see a retirement job as a way to stay busy and expand their social circle and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I would suggest, however, that there is another path to consider and it can be the most rewarding activity of your life. I wish I had done it before I retired because it would have been a great safety net to have in my final years of work when I was so desperate to cross the “retirement” finish line. If I had had a little extra income, I might have been able to escape the clutches of Corporate America a little sooner.
If you have been fired from retirement because your finances are in need of more income or if you find yourself bored and in need of added mental stimulation, my advice is to consider a little business that can be tailored to an interest or hobby that you have. This is a growing trend among retirees, and we are living in a world that is perfect for this opportunity because of the internet. If you’re thinking that you don’t have the skills for it or that it takes a lot of money, I would suggest looking into this grand adventure a little further because there is one company that will lead you step by step into creating a website that you can be proud of and the results speak for themselves. This is a fascinating business and it’s one that appeals to my love of writing and photography, but the fact is that you can despise those two activities and still create a business that you absolutely love to work on. I never had a good idea of what I wanted to do for a living, but I was told that if you did something you loved to do, you’d never have to work a day in your life. I did not think my love of history could be turned into an income other than teaching, which was not something I could see myself doing. The number of websites devoted to historical subjects is mind-boggling if you spend any time on the internet. Could I have created a website devoted to Presidential Homes and historic sites? No doubt. And I still might do it at some point in the future, but I created this site about enjoying retirement because I met so many people who said they were bored. A few of them went out and got a job so they could fill up the hours in their day. It’s not that they needed the money, they just didn’t know what to do with themselves. “Have you been fired from retirement?” I asked one former police officer who said having nothing to do was starting to wear him down. I was stunned and actually a little bit saddened. It doesn’t have to be that way.
I fully realize that I’m probably a minority when it comes to disliking my former workplace, but I have always thought that everyone should consider creating a second source of income separate from their employment. A small business would be ideal, but it couldn’t take too much time, or it would interfere with your primary job. The arrival of the internet has filled that gap. A website is perfect for retirees or anyone preparing for retirement. There are many ways you can adapt a site to align with an interest or hobby and YouTube has provided the possibility of having your own channel devoted to an interest or subject that you might be passionate about. People give classes on cooking and woodworking and even chess. One of my great loves was boxing and I’ve come across a couple of guys who give their assessments of what might have happened if two all-time greats had met in their prime. Would Jack Dempsey have been able to handle Rocky Marciano or Mike Tyson? They are having a great time doing it and have thousands of subscribers to their channel. Why couldn’t that be you? Have you been fired from retirement? Do something creative and challenging to solve your problem. Let your imagination explore all the possibilities before settling for a “job” that will just provide money and little else. I think our golden years can be the start of new things if you can just take the first step. Go ahead and make it happen. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
