No one gets to retirement without a lifetime of experience behind them. Hopefully, we have all learned some valuable lessons along the way. You should leverage your wisdom in retirement to help others and to benefit yourself. Some of us were lucky to have one or more mentors along the way. Perhaps it was our parents, a teacher, a coach or a co-worker. There was someone we listened to and someone we paid attention to. When you think back on all of the things you went through in your life, you’re probably like most people and think about how you could have done things a little differently or been very proud of what you accomplished. Sharing that learning can be one of the most valuable things you can do if you do it the right way. No matter who you are and what you did, you have something to share.
People’s lives take strange turns and it’s amazing how a small event can turn a life around. I met my wife because she came in to apply for a job. That’s all it took. I happen to believe that there are things at work in our lives that we don’t fully understand and, when we reach this age, we have a different perspective than when things were happening. People who have had serious illnesses or an accident or some other life-threatening situations often emerge with an understanding of life that they didn’t have before. Just getting to retirement age is an accomplishment. You have experienced a lifetime and met all the challenges. You can’t help but learn something in the process. You can leverage your wisdom in retirement and help others at the same time. If you had a crisis or difficulty in your life, your words and reassurances to others in the same situation can make a huge difference to them.
Many retirees are part of support groups for people who are undergoing the same difficulties. Losing a spouse at this age can be devastating and the people who help you grieve and put your life back together are to be admired. Most of them will tell you that they are helping themselves in the process because it helps them make sense of their loss. They have learned that if you leverage your wisdom in retirement, you’re helping a fellow human being on their journey through life and that can be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences that you can have.
But your sharing doesn’t have to be about a crisis or an illness. Do you know how many young people (and fellow retirees) need guidance on how to handle their finances? Let’s face it, most people will never be rich. The statistics tell us that. And yet, the path to financial success is pretty basic. In fact, if you follow two rules, you’ll probably end up ahead of most people. Rule One is not to spend more than you make and Rule Two is to invest as much as you can as early as you can. You don’t have to get more complicated than that. We have lived a very good life by following those rules and, when people ask me what our secret was, I tell them the two rules. There really is no secret. People find that hard to believe but it’s been true for us our whole lives. When I suggest that you should leverage your wisdom in retirement, it can be as simple as sharing something basic as those two rules.
We tend to complicate our lives more than we have to. If I was forced to come up with a third rule to follow, it would be to pay attention to your own life rather than somebody else’s. Stop worrying about what other people are doing and discover what makes you happy. Your inner self is the only person you need to answer to in this lifetime and, sadly, many people are afraid to spend time in silence and contemplate what life is all about. As I’ve said before on this website, I have read literally hundreds of self-help books and one of my favorite authors is Zig Ziglar who has some wonderful words to live by. One of them was that you could get anything you want in life by helping others get what they want. He led a life that personified how you should leverage your wisdom in retirement.
Everyone has things to share – including you! How will you leverage your wisdom in retirement? If you have a desire to help others, it’s a wonderful way to do it and there are many avenues to explore. Do you have a book in you? Don’t say no so quickly because many retirees have started their own retirement journal and turned it into a book. I happen to think everyone has a book in them. Maybe you can share your wisdom by volunteering with a support group or at a hospital. It is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Maybe you can start your own website. Technology has come a long way, and you don’t need any special skills to have a website up and running. You’ll be surprised at how rewarding it is if you choose a subject that you care about. You’ll always have a little bit more to say because, if it’s your passion, you’re always learning something new. That’s what retirement should be. There’s so much to learn from the great thinkers and so many places to see. Why not get started today and start to leverage your wisdom in retirement. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
