A lot of people go through money problems at some point in their lives. Even when you’re working full-time at a job, you still might come up short of paying your bills. My father almost always had a second job. It was just a fact of life. He always wanted us to have a nice Christmas and would work at night and on weekends to make sure that he did. It was a very common solution back then – if you needed extra money, you got an extra job. For retired people who may be facing a situation where their pension and social security check is not quite enough to cover expenses, what’s the best answer to make extra money in retirement?
Getting another job, just like my father and many others did, is certainly a possibility. One thing that I would like to present, however, is that, in retirement, you may have a little bit more latitude in what that job is. As a person who spent their whole life working you certainly have more experience and probably expertise in an area that could be very attractive to an employer and command a higher salary. Dependable workers are a valuable commodity, and employers know that retirees are a very dependable group as a whole. You might also consider getting a job related to an interest that you have or a hobby that you enjoy. That will make the work a little more enjoyable. In fact, a couple of our friends who live to play golf have part-time jobs at golf courses not just to make extra money in retirement but to get discounted rounds and be around a pastime that they absolutely love.
You should also base your decision on whether your current need of extra funds is a one-time occurrence or an ongoing shortfall. If it’s a one-time amount, can you negotiate a pay-off plan that you can afford. With medical bills this is usually the case as long as you continue to make payments there shouldn’t be a problem. If you just owe a single amount, there is also a possibility that you can sell some of your “collectibles” and make an amount of money that might surprise you. Do a search on the internet to see if anyone else is selling what you might have in your basement or attic. You can make extra money in retirement by selling your “stuff” on a site like eBay. Of course, the possibility of a job is always there but, if possible, why not do something that might be a little more enjoyable? Who knows, you might like it more than you think. You would not be the first retiree to start a little business selling what they’ve collected over the years. Technology has changed our world in a lot of ways and one of the most amazing things is the power the internet provides people of all ages.

If you want to make extra money in retirement you should do a little search on the internet to look at all the possibilities out there. If you have a hobby or an interest, why not consider starting a website based on that activity? That’s exactly how this website got started. Fortunately, I did not need money but the year we moved into the home that we built, the world shut down because of Covid. There was no place we could go and we were basically shut inside for a year. I looked at all the ways that I could work on my hobby of writing and came up with this as a solution. I have enjoyed working on this website more than I ever thought possible. And the best part is that it’s not like owning a store where you have to open up every day. When you post something on a website, it’s there forever. Do a little exploring on your own and I think you’ll see that a website might be something to consider.
If you need to make extra money in retirement, the main thing to consider is how to make this as enjoyable as possible. If a job is what you decide upon, make it something that you enjoy and someplace that you’ll look forward to going to. Also remember that cutting costs in retirement is just as good as making more money. Make a retirement budget and review every bill to see if you can reduce it. A shortage of funds does not have to put an end to the fun in life. There are many ways to enjoy new experiences and learn new things without spending a lot of money. Perhaps the trips to Europe will have to be curtailed or even eliminated but there are many local places you can go to and have just as much fun. Sometimes a problem leads to a better solution and there is no reason you can’t come out of this better than ever. Don’t let a lack of funds lead to a lack of fun. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
