The ability to retire early is something a lot of people dream about. It certainly first and foremost on my mind as found myself in my late fifties. For a while I thought I would be able to do it but, then, the Great Recession of 2008 occurred, and I watched my 401K get cut in half along with everyone else’s. It was devastating. People don’t remember how scary it was because the country came out of it rather quickly relatively speaking. When you read about how the Depression lingered, you come to realize the way we dealt with the economic events of 2008-9 was far more effective. But, the dream to retire early had to be put on hold.
As we rebuilt our finances and, again, approached retirement age, some of our friends questioned our wisdom about giving up our careers and cutting off our income. Even worse, what would you do all day? I was amazed at that question and then realized they were very serious. I would have loved to have been able to retire early because I never had any doubt about how I was going to spend my time and, even better, I knew how relieved I would be leave Corporate America. In fairness, they were very good to me but I couldn’t wait to get out.
