Retirement is an Endless Vacation

If you think back to your working life, you’ll probably remember how much you looked forward to your vacation time.  You weren’t even completely through your week of relaxation before you were talking about your next one.  Vacations are always a top priority, and many people painstakingly plan their time away from work to make the most of each and every week.  They’re very smart to do that.  The question I have is why don’t they do that for their retirement?  Retirement is an endless vacation in some ways, but too many people let the time drift away without taking full advantage of this wonderful and well-earned time in their life. Just because you have more time now than you did when you were working doesn’t mean you should waste it.  You can slow it down and savor it like a fine wine, but I believe your retirement should have a purpose and this is especially true for the earlier years of your endless vacation.

Retirement is an Endless Vacation especially in the early years.

The reality is that we will probably never be in as good shape physically as we are when we first retire.  The calendar is relentless, and no one wins the battle against time.  Your early retirement years should be packed with destinations and activities that you have wanted to experience your whole life.  And, if you didn’t plan your first years in that manner, there’s no reason you can’t change that starting right now.  Although this article states that retirement is an endless vacation, we all know that isn’t quite true.  While most of us will never have to work again, the “endless” part of that phrase is wishful thinking.  But that’s just an added reason to make the most of this wonderful time in your life.  Think back to those childhood days and all the dreams that you had and all the things you wanted to do and places you wanted to see.  In some ways, you are still that child who wants those dreams to come true or at least get as close as possible.  If you don’t do something about that right now, when are you going to make those things happen.  Don’t let those dreams go unfilled.  You had them for a reason.

Golf Can Be Your Job

While it may be impossible to recreate those dreams down to the last detail, you can made adjustments and get closer than you think.  Did you dream of running for President?  Try becoming a candidate for a town office.  You’ll not only be doing something worthwhile, but you’ll get a little taste of what it’s like to give a speech and meet people on the campaign trail.  Why not?  Retirement is an endless vacation but, if you want to go back to work and run a campaign then why not give it a try?  Go in search of a senior citizen softball league and you’ll see people your own age who haven’t yet forgotten their dream of playing in Yankee Stadium.  And those golfers you see out on the course are playing the Master’s Tournament in the Field of Dreams that exists in their minds.  That’s part of the fun of retirement.  It’s a chance to enjoy life to the fullest and revisit every childhood dream.  The only person stopping you from doing these things is you!

Local Theater

Did you ever want to be the star of stage and screen or have your own television show?  It’s not too late if you get a little creative.  Local theaters are always looking for actors and actresses and some of the productions are quite good.  Our daughter loves the stage, and she still has hopes for Broadway.  Acting and singing will always be a part of her life.  She is doing what she loves and so should you!  There have been no less than four Oscar winners over the age of eighty so there’s no excuse that it’s too late.  Just go out and do it.  Retirement is an endless vacation if you’re doing what you love.  Every day that I worked my mind would wander to what I would rather be doing.  I was determined to fill my retirement with those activities and it’s one of the reasons I started this website.  I know many other seniors who have done similar things in their retirement.  There are at least two people in our community who do podcasts from their home.  It’s like having your own television show and, if you have a creative spirit within you (and I think everybody does!), then there’s almost no limit to what you can do starting right now.

You can look at this time in your life as a steady progression to the end of your life or you can say that retirement is an endless vacation and go out and live the rest of your days conquering your dreams and making sure the world hasn’t heard the last from you.  Live your life to the fullest.  Go out and see the world.  It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
