Retirement is that bucket of gold at the end of the rainbow. We work all our lives to get to this point; it almost seems too good to be true when we finally get there. There are no more meetings or conference calls and no presentations that you lose sleep over. Your time is finally your own. The forty, fifty, sixty or more hours you spent at work plus the time you spent getting there and coming back are now yours to control. Retirement is filled with possibilities about how to spend it. The reality of waking up with no appointments on your calendar can take some people by surprise. They didn’t plan for it. They planned other aspects of their retirement like the financial aspects and making sure they wouldn’t run out of money, but they didn’t plan for how they would spend their time. I come across many people who say they are bored in retirement, and I just don’t understand it. I started this website to help people make the most of this wonderful time of life because, when it comes to enjoying life, retirement is filled with possibilities. But just like anything worthwhile in life, it takes some work and planning. That work is a lot of fun and planning may be the most revealing exercise you can do in understanding what kind of person you really are.
To fully enjoy retirement, you’ve got to do some critical thinking about what makes you happy. You just spent forty or more years working for an organization that told you what to do every day. Did you ever think of what YOU wanted to do? Did you ever think about what YOUR interests were? It’s a worthwhile exercise to go back through your life and look at the times that you were truly happy. What were you doing? How did it make you feel? Look at old pictures and yearbooks and think back to the dreams you had that didn’t quite work out. I really believe that retirement is a time to nurture your inner self. I think people are more creative than they let other people suspect. Many people have an inner writer or artist that is dying to come out. The master block builder in kindergarten may have an inner woodworker hidden deep inside. Retirement is filled with possibilities. Those dreams of being an artist or writer or photographer that got pushed to the background in the interest of making a livable wage can be brought to the forefront again. Why not? That’s what retirement is for.
Many people find great happiness in their families and their children were what they lived for. That is to be admired and can be carried on by being present in their lives. Grandchildren are a blessing and can never be doted upon enough. For many people, however, that family life that they had can’t be a part of their present life for many reasons. But that doesn’t mean that the joy can’t be experienced again. Taking an interest in other children can be a surrogate for the children of your own that might be missing. Volunteering at an organization that helps children is a great way to nurture your love for children and make a difference in the world. You’ll find that when you serve others you bring an unbelievable amount of joy into your own life as well. Retirement is filled with possibilities for making that happen.
Retirement is a time for trying things you never had the time to try before. And there’s almost no downside to any of it. You don’t have a job to worry about anymore and what you do with your time is nobody’s business but yours! Did you ever want to start a business? Do you have a hobby or interest that you can turn into an income? Most people, when they think about it, have some kind of small business that they wanted to try. This website was started because I always wanted to have a platform to write and pursue my personal interests. I’m sure you have interests that you want to pursue further. There’s nothing wrong with turning those interests or hobbies into a little extra money. Many retirees love to travel and supplement their income with travel-based activities like writing and photography. We’ve all read reviews of travel destinations, restaurants and cruises. Why couldn’t that be you? Why couldn’t you be the one who takes the time to find hidden gems for fellow travelers and get paid for it at the same time? Retirement is filled with possibilities like this.
Why not give your retirement a fresh start? Learn a new skill or start a new business. Invest in yourself. Reignite that hidden passion and desire. Retirement isn’t just the end of your working career but the start of a whole new period in your life where you are the Chief Executive Officer. If you’re bored in retirement, you have no one to blame but yourself! Take your blinders off and look at this exciting world that we live in. There are always new things to learn, new places to go and new things to try. Retirement is filled with possibilities if we just take the time to look. Start designing your future today.
