It’s been eight years since my last day of work and I am amazed at all the things we have done, the places we’ve seen and all of the memories we have created. For years I worked to provide for our family and save up for retirement. There were many things that got put on hold. Trips that would have kept me out of work for more than two weeks were not a possibility. Starting a new hobby or pursuing one of my many historical interests were just too time-consuming to become a reality while I was working. I’m happy to say that I’ve made up for lost time. Retirement never gets boring because life is an endless adventure. We cannot believe where the time goes sometimes and, at this point, we don’t know how we ever found the time to work.

My wife and I both love to travel and explore new places and, fortunately, we’ve been able to see far more than we ever thought possible. Did we ever think we’d get to Sydney or Aukland or be able to spend a couple of weeks in Hawaii? How about going through the Panama Canal or seeing he Northern Lights? It’s been an amazing experience, and I do not say all of this to brag but, rather, to inspire anyone who is retired to travel as much as they are able and not put it off. We have learned that they years can slow you down so it’s important to do as much as possible when you’re able to get around. If you’re able to travel, retirement never gets boring. And you don’t have to go too far. Retirement allows you to take your time and experience what life has to offer at a slower pace. Being able to take a little extra time to explore a town can make all the difference in the world. Searching out a new restaurant can be the perfect way to experience different locations and different foods.

My wife and I are very different people. She loves the social life, and her calendar is packed with card games and different clubs that she belongs to. She has made new friends and it’s very rare to go somewhere without her running into someone she knows. Even in Hawaii, we met someone from her garden club so her network of friends is truly nationwide sometimes. For her, retirement never gets boring because there is always something new going on just about every day.
My world is a little bit different. I am far less social than my wife. It’s not that I don’t like people. I’m comfortable being by myself with all of my books and the endless topics that keep me fascinated (and sometimes awake at night). I love history and staying informed about current events is very important to me although I can see how people cannot take a steady diet of news. I also have a lot of different topics that interest me. I begin each day on a website that tells me all the things that happened on this day in history and that usually sets me off on a couple of hours of research on a topic or person that I haven’t read about in a while. I think if you have a love of learning, retirement never gets boring. There’s always something new to learn or even something from the past that you want to revisit again. If you like music, try looking at the hits from your youth and I guarantee you that the memories will start coming back to you.

If you’re a sports fan, retirement gives you the time to keep track of almost everything that you couldn’t when you were too busy working. I went to bed many times without knowing who won a game because I had to be at work anywhere from 2 AM because that was the nature of the business. Retirement is the time to “get even” and watch a game no matter how late it gets. Although, to be honest, I sometimes fall asleep now. But that’s okay because you can always watch the replay. With all the things that go on in the world, retirement never gets boring. There’s always something new to learn and new things to try.
It’s never too late to learn a new skill or even start a new business. It’s never too late to plan a road trip or start a new hobby. Life is what you make of it and that’s true of retirement as well. So go out and start a new project or create a new club. Join a golf club or start a rock band! It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
