Variety Keeps Retirement Exciting

There is nothing better than retirement.  It has been the best time of my life, and I never take for granted the freedom that you have when there is no job to go to, no meetings to attend and no projects to manage.  For some people, however, retirement is a recipe for boredom precisely because those things are missing and they do the same thing every day.  My message to them is to mix things up a bit.  Variety keeps retirement exciting and there are ways to make your days whiz by even when you’re stuck inside on a rainy day.  You always have the power to change your life.  Most people forget that.

You can change things up even in small ways and it will make a difference.  A friend of ours lives in a 55+ retirement community that features so many activities her calendar is completely full.  She thought that this was the answer to all of her problems but guess what?  She called about two months ago and confessed that although she was extremely busy, she wasn’t having as much fun lately.  She loves to play cards and was even getting tired of her daily competition.  Our suggestion?  Take up a new game like bridge.  Her next call was to tell us how much she loved the game and how good the instructor was.  All it takes is a little change of pace.  Variety keeps retirement exciting.

Card Playing

We know people who take a vacation every year in the same location.  They always say that they love it and wouldn’t change, but I do hear a little doubt in their voice when I ask them if they ever thought of going someplace new.  My wife and I definitely have our favorite winter locations, but we always try to add a new place each year.  We have our favorite restaurants in each location but we to experiment here as well and give a new place a try.  It’s been very successful.  We almost have a completely different list of favorite places and will continue to try new ones each year.  We’ve even added some completely different cuisines to our experimentation by trying Indian food and a completely vegan restaurant.  Our daughter has a very restricted diet and, apparently, so do a lot of other people.  We have found some excellent substitute ingredients for her and, I have to say, there are some plant-based burgers that are as good as beef.  Well, almost. I’m an absolute carnivore and for me to even admit that a vegan burger is good is a major step.  Variety keeps retirement exciting and that even applies to food.

Variety keeps retirement exciting and that applies to hobbies, travel, food and entertainment.
